get it out, take it away do it now now now now now. trust me on this. and then never ever ever take it to a garage ever ever ever again. seriously. Do it. Do it now.

too bloody late. :tomato:

Just went down there, engine on floor car on ramp - it ain't going anywhere. But never ever ever will I take my car there. I need a good place to take it for its MOT in November is my next concern.

but I asked them flat out how long they have spent on the car so far and how much longer they expect to be spending on it.

Spent four hours so far I am told - does four hours extracting nakerd old engine out seem reasonable?

They also told me that they do not expect to spend any more than a total of 10-12 hours on the car. They are fitting new belts and plugs etc as well.

This made me feel much better. At least the car is on the ramp, bonnet and wheels off, they can't do any other car until mine is done.

They couldn't commit to either tomorrow or saturday to have it complete, but I have told them that the hire car is going back tomorrow at the very very latest and if it goes after saturday they will have to lend me a car. They didn't argue.

Proof is in the pudding at the end of the day, but I feel much better having seen it.

I'm going to go down there tomorrow as well, just to keep the pressure on.

the book times for remove and refit engine complete is 6.6 hours.

and for remove & fit exchange engine (ie tranfer all wiring/switches/pipe/turbos etc) is 11.5 hours :)

garages do tend to charge 2/3 hours on top of book times :rtfm:

Thanks mate. I was estimating that it shouldn't take any more than 13 hours based on the average of the quotes I did get.

Note to self take it to a garage who has at least quoted you next time.............. :swear: :whip:

I'm sure it'll be fine. You don't want them to rush it and at the end of the day like you say - they'll have to get it done before they can do any other jobs.

Just make sure you've got something written for the warranty of the work and what is / isn't covered along with expected turn around times in event of a problem.

Last thing you want is for a pipe to come off and cause some problem and them either deny liability or take another two months to put it right.

Will do. Its not their work I doubt, its their work ethic. A mechanic who can't say no is the real problem I think, coupled with a now almost bankrupt fto owner.

The engine itself is covered with warranty thats the main thing I guess.

I don't think there is any danger of them rushing it.

I'm glad I went down there and spoke to him frankly about it, feel much happier now.

I take it you bought the engine 2nd hand from a breakers yeah?

The warranty will cover the parts (ie the engine) but not the labuor to fit it. That needs to be covered by the garage. Make sure it is when you go to pick it up. Pay by credit card if you can, that way it means it will have to go through their books, and also you'll get a receipt. Make sure the warranty info is written on it.

However, before it comes to payment, get your head under the bonnett, and point out EVERYTHING that is not EXACTLY as it should be. Even the smallest thing. If they've given you a loan car by then, then you're in no rush. Maybe get some pics of good stock engine bays to take with you to reference. Then go and test-drive it. Make sure it's perfect before you put your hand in your pocket.

I got the engine from a second hand fto part specialist, from the FTO owners club, thats the bit with the warranty.

The advice is brilliant thanks :D

Oh Sabrina, so does this mean it'll be ready tomorrow?? Been meaning to pop in there for a visit, may go there tomorrow sometime to make sure it'll be ready by the end of day.

It's odd coz with my car and my parents cars we've never had a problem. But both times you've been there you've had problems. Maybe he fancies you and wants you to keep coming back so he can see you :p

Have taken tomorrow of work now as well.

Thinking of sending the heavies round there to sort them out. Who wants to volunteer?
