Tyson
That is one lovely car on the outside but it annoys me so much that BMW interiors are so clinical and boring.

Bossco
I know! There's a lot of bad press and propaganda going around about the S65 engine, rod bearing wear and failure........especialy from our American friends. And as luck would have it, the people giving out the bad press offer a full repair service. May be a synical view but it's happening. Personally, I don't think it's as bad of an issue as most stories are making out and there have been very very few engines actually fail because of bearing wear. The only real problem they suffer is the breakdown of the throttle actuators and both of mine have been replaced. It's like most cars, buy a good example and you're on to a good thing. Buy an a abused dog then don't be surprised when problems occur.
Dnk
I was looking at an E93 and i must be honest this really put me off From what i can see the general thinking is premature bearing wear is down to the engine being loaded before its up to temp. Obviously the internet only shows the bad side and the numbers are pretty low but BMW did a recall on the E46 M3 suffering the same problem
Bossco
Yeah thats exactly the cause mate. Engines being hammered while temps are low. It's a popular view that it's down to so many cars being leased form BMW by people who had no intention of keeping them or looking after them. They wanted a brand new M3, drove them hard and handed them back to BMW. Thankfully mines not one of those. There was a stat put up on M3 owners club a while back about it. I'll see if I can dig it out. But basically out of 60,000 engines built there were 3 recorded rod bearing failures in the UK.

Obviously the internet only shows the bad side and the numbers are pretty low but BMW did a recall on the E46 M3 suffering the same problem Sorry for the thread hijack but what was wrong with the E46? The S54 is the same as in my Zed and there ins't anything mentioned on the Z4 forum about recalls. Unless this is pre 2006 when the Z4M was launched. We see a lot of bearing shell issues but generally on cars that have been tracked. Good luck with the sale Bossco. H.
Bossco
Thanks Havard. I didn't know the E46 suffered any baering issues. I know they have vanos problems and boot floors need looking at, but apart from that, wasn't aware of any engine issues.
