Cheap head units

Dnk

Recommended Posts

I've had one in a previous car and it bothered me for two reasons...

1. when open, it sat in front on the air vent and got very hot when the warm air was on in winter.

2. the very slight vibrations of the screen when driving bothered me. It wasn't really bad, but every bump or pothole caused a slight vibration on the screen which was forever catching my eye.

Personally, I much prefer a double din because of that

The vents are either side of my head unit so that's not going to be an issue, the heater controls are directly under

the head unit so it has to be single din

Right, well my double din stereo cost £1000 when new, however I bought it 2 years old so was a lot cheaper.

The picture is amazing, but I never really use it.

My old flip out screen was a kenwood, I loved that stereo, but again never really used it to its potential.

but it worked, did the trick and was useable whilst driving, big enough buttons to change track/channel etc

Please dont :)

Nothing ruins the interior of a great classic more than a flip out stereo. Horrible things, and troublesome. I used to replace so many motorised units of all makes (even Alpine) because the mechanism failed.

Get something period correct and classy  failing that, something subtle from the likes of Clarion, Becker, Nakamichi will be classy.

Clarion have got this one which I think looks great

Been looking to get myself a good double din and swaying towards this! Any advice on this one would be great!

No experience of that unit, but it looks nice and is a decent spec for the money. Will have a finish at least equivalent to a similar level Alpine, and certainly a much classier looking and feeling thing than the likes of Sony or JVC.

Yea I’m really tempted by it mate! Spec does sound really good. Doesn’t mention a rear view camera for parking though which I would like!

I was going to go for alpine or even a kenwood, but alpine are very expensive, kenwood affordable but reports the sound is slacking in areas. Jvc just look cheap!

Found a nakamichi cheap though first time I’ve heard of them, could be a option as they do underseat subs, door speakers and stuff, all depends on what the quality would be

Or newer slightly higher priced naka

Can’t say I’ve ever experienced clarion quality tbh.

I cant fit a double din in the Range Rover :innocent:

I found two Clarion OE head units that are seriously rare but both have problems, i sent them to the Clarion service centre who sent them back saying they were both beyond saving

From what i can see most head units don't look very classy no matter who makes them

This is one of the current Clarion range, looks much more 'oem' style than most aftermarket headunits: http://www.clarion.com/gb/en/products-personal/audio/FZ102E/index.html

Looks like Becker have stopped supplying the aftermarket, which leaves Nakamichi. More understated than most, but i suspect these units are basically tarted up and rebranded Sony units, unlike their old stuff which was amongst the very best.

To be honest i spent long enough finding these two units so i shall just fit new.

I'm shelving the idea of going the flip screen route as i really don't need it and think i'll just

fit something like the Pioneer DEH-X7800DAB or Pioneer DEH X8700DAB, the later will look fine

in the Range

If your after a decent, cheaper end unit....... have a look at the Kenwood KDC-X7000DAB I have the double din version in the supra and the single din version in the cooper s.

Great units and multiple set up options to fit the sound staging to the car.... I managed to get them for £135ish (each) on amazon.

Didnt need an all singing and dancing £1000 unit in either car, to be honest don't think spending much more would achieve much over these units. Don't need sat nav, got one and the one on the iphone is great and don't watch dvd's on the move for obvious reasons..lol Have purchased more expensive units in the past and now not really sure its worth the extra expense,,,,,

Can’t find much info in the UK but it would appear that in the US market it isn’t a straight swap.

But there is plenty of info on how to wire them up and which harness’s do fit and work

Where would i find this, any links

cheers
