Soopra
Can anyone tell me whether my car will pass an MOT if I have harnesses in the front? I have no rear seats (no rear interior at all). Do I need to keep the seat belts? Thank you
grahamc
I have always kept the seat belts.... much easier and much more comfortable
HarleyFDMD
Providing the harnesses are mounted correctly you'll be fine. A really fussy Mot tester might write them as advisories as a non oem restraint system but they shouldnt fail

HarleyFDMD
Well.. thats where it might fall into abit of a grey area. I would imagine the mounting points for the oem seat belts would suffice as far as the Mot was concerned.. however, in terms of "harnesses/motorsport/rollcages" etc etc the harnesses should be mounted at roughly a 90 degree angle to your shoulders, or atleast angled at 90 degrees with the aid of a harness bar. With the harnesses mounted into the rear seat belt positions they are angled incorrectly and can actually do more damage than good in an accident by pulling your shoulders downwards. With that being said though most road cars with harnesses seem to mount them this way anyway (but that doesnt make it right). I have harnesses in mine and have had a harnesses bar welded into my rollcage. The correct way to use a harness bar is like this: The harness is still mounted to the floor but in the event of an accident the downwards strain on your shoulders is deflected away by the bar. Some people mount there harneses directly to the bar.. this is also wrong unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer of the harness bar. I did alot of research on all of this while fitting my harnesses. Perhaps dont take everything i have said as gospel but just as a guide, i am only reciting what i have heard and read from other sources. Soopra
That's brilliant, thank you. My harness is currently bolted to the floor where you rear strut brace is and is almost 90 degrees
charlton
I have fixed back bucket seats and harness and haven't had an issue in 2 or 3 MOT's. From what I read, the harness has to have a standard seatbelt buckle to be MOT compliant - it cannot be the twist release from the racing harnesses. I have these and they're attached to the rear strut brace
Soopra
cool, thank you. Looks hopeful as I have Sparco harnesses like the one above
sideexitsupra
I never had an issue with 5 point harness with twist release. But it was a very friendly tester, ahem.
Richie_k83
I have never had an issue running harnesses. Providing your seats are completely removed, it should be an issue really. As for the correct mounting position of Harnesses, they shouldnt be at anymore the a 45 degree angle (according to my TRS Harness Paperwork). Less is preffered i guess. Worth mentioning that its not ideal to run Harnesses unless you have a rollcage. If you roll the car and are strapped to your seat, you'll end up with your head caved in
