Removing a private number plate

Since my supra looks like its off to holland, i want to remove my private plate and keep it on retention. Is it possible to do this even though the car has no mot/tax/insurance? I still have all the paperwork with the original number plate, so is it possible to just out that back on?

Never had to do this before, so hence why im asking :)

I forgot how useless the DVLA is  This is what i got from the system...

This registration number cannot be retained online

Transaction ID J8XGT************

You are unable to continue with this application online.

Please send a V317 application, and the V5C registration certificate (logbook) to:

DVLA personalised registrations

Swansea

SA99 1DS

So i decided to try and speak to an "agent" via the online chat and they are absolute shocking! According to them the only way i can keep my plate is if i send away my V5c and then WAIT for a new number to be issued even though the car is getting exported. So i have to pretty much lose out on my plate just so i don't miss out on a sale of the car

Does this read that it either has to be taxed or on a sorn, if its not sorn then it needs to be taxed which then needs mot and insurance

The vehicle must:

be registered with DVLA in the UK

be available for inspection

be able to move under its own power

be of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate

either have been taxed (or have had a SORN in place) continuously for the last 5 years

Your vehicle will need to be taxed if it’s had a SORN for longer than 5 years. It might also need to be inspected.

Just found this

Take a private registration number off a vehicle

You can apply to take a private (personalised) registration number off a vehicle to:

transfer it to another vehicle

hold on to it until you want to use it again in the future

You can use this service if your vehicle:

is registered with DVLA

can move under its own power

is either taxed or a SORN has been in place for the last 5 years without any gaps

You might need to take your vehicle to DVLA for an inspection. You’ll be told if you need to do this.

The private number will be retained in the name of the registered keeper. You’ll need to remove the number before you sell or destroy the vehicle, or you’ll lose the right to use it.

The original registration number will usually be reassigned to the vehicle when you remove the private number.

It's often quoted that the whole British Empire was run by 4000 civil servants , it's not true , it was nearer 40000 , today we have 6000 in DVLA alone and they have computerised systems - that's progress and technology for you ! :(

Its any easy process, just fill out forms and send of some money and your current V5 that has the number plate assigned. You'll get a replacement V5 with the cars original number.

It is cheaper though to put the number you want to retain onto another car rather than onto a retention. Placing onto another car is a one off payment whereas retention you have to renew and should you fail (or forget) to renew a retention its bye bye number plate.

The process when I did it only took a few days.
