krisgowing
Alright lads, Was driving home from work when there sounded like a clunk and a bit of a burn smell, looked to see all my warning lights come on. Looked under the hood everything seemed okay just that smell. Car is running okay , Any ideas what it could be Thanks in advance
mattdavies
At a guess the Crank pulley has failed I would do the tipex test on the crank pulley ( search on here will tell you about it )
krisgowing
Thought possibly the alternator, Will try the above and do a test with the multi meter Didn't want to start looking at them if could be anything else
Al Massey
If you can get someone to give you hand, have the car idling and get someone to turn the steering wheel full lock both sides whilst you watch all the pulleys and the belts to see if any slip or stick. krisgowing
Was driving home and the lights slowly went dimmer, eventually cut out - know it's not the battery not even a year old Looks like it is the alternator Typically does the whole thing go or can it be repaired? Scooter
The only thing I would question is the 'clunk' this as pointed out above could easily be the outer ring of the crank pulley disappearing! have you checked this? the aux belt can remain (must have) on the remains of the pulley but the belt won't be under as much tension which 'may' mean the alternator isn't charging as it should giving the warning lights. Scooter
Just check this outer ring is still on the bottom pulley ie is the aux belt running on the grooves as it should be or on a smooth inner section of the remains of the crank pulley! http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?84627-Crank-Pulley-fell-off-!!&highlight=seperated+pulley
rider
The only thing I would question is the 'clunk' this as pointed out above could easily be the outer ring of the crank pulley disappearing! I'd go with this as well. I had the grooved ring on the bottom crank pulley break up after 18 years. Then you can get belt slip causing the burnt rubber smell and warning lights. You can crank the engine on a socket and bar and feel all away around the crank to check the pulley grooves are there and intact.

Just try this!!!! If the crank pulley is fine then look at the alternator. Saves you guessing and spending money on things that may not be broken

I had mine refurbished locally recently for £45. Its hard to find a place where you can just get a new alternator without shipping back the old one. Try to search locally - something I havent thought about (been advised by my friend when I was moaning I cant just get a new one) and it took few hours to take it out, refurbish and fit back in.
