el_bandido
Having looked at messing about with my IS250 a lot over the past few months, I've been wondering if the 3GR-FSE might be a good choice for the Supra instead of the UZ. I only know of one example where someone has tuned up a GR, that's Ray Hall and his turbo v6 GT86. However, the 3GR is 252 horsepower on the Lexus map; the short stroke, 10:1 compression and D4-S suggest it might be a great candidate for something revvy and boosted. It wouldn't surprise me if this got close to 300hp with a new ECU and better induction/exhausts, plus it will bolt up to the 6 speed manual from an IS250. Curious to see if anyone else knows of any examples of these engines being messed about with; peak torque at 3400 rpm, (allegedly) forged internals on the 3GR and direct injection all sound promising. Then I start thinking about the 100kg+ weight saving, the fact that it has a timing chain and would retain a 3.0 6 cylinder of the toyota family and I start stroking my chin a bit. I think a rotrex (or two) on one of these would give a very nice graph in the 500hp range. Everything else I've been doing on the Supra has been with a view to modernising the important bits; I think this might be a good heart for the car if I was to continue that endeavour. Not sure what kind of engine management I'd have to have to cope with a properly tuned D4-S and 4 vvti cams though. Or I should shut up and get the UZ installed. el_bandido
Mods - can someone move this to "off topic" please. Wasn't paying attention!
samdale
Certainly several 2GRs have seen there way into MR2s. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=829813 I'd love one in my MR2 but may suit the supra too? Similar power as a TT supra before any mention of FI. And we know it can handle being supercharged. Something that's probably rather tricky to do in an MR2 but easier with a supra engine bay. el_bandido
Those 2GR's are non-D4S as well. I've actually been in the pits at the Hancook 24 hour with Rogue motorsport and had some extensive chats about the 2GR swaps they do. The only reason I wasn't looking at a 2GR for the Supra is because we don't get them in the longitudinal configuration in this country. The 2GR would be the gold standard I think. There is a supercharged IS350 that was imported into this country that ended up being faster than an ISF. Found it last night, I'll try and dig the link back out. I like the idea of the 2GR but it would be some serious money to get one into the country. Does anyone know if Syvecs will cope with D4-S? That would be 12 injectors to handle. el_bandido
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-2nd-gen-2006-2013/673626-seeing-is-believing-358rwhp-400rwtq-supercharged-is350-dyno-d.html 352hp and 390ft.lb is encouraging considering it wasn't a stand alone. I definitely think these engines have potential.
