Hitbox Junkie
Has anyone own a Dachshund, myself and girlfriend recently moved flat and this should be a place we will stay for the next couple years before we have a deposit for a house. with the car being relatively in good order with little mods that I want to do apart from a big list I have only major thing being a new twin plate clutch that I want done at some point over winter. All that being said we are redecorating the flat and sorting out the little patio area we are going to be to looking at getting a Dachshund Puppy just wondering if any one has had one? I'm used to bigger dogs such as Labradors, malamutes, German Shepard and Rhodesian ridgeback. the reason for having the sausage dog is that its small and wont take up to much space in regards to being in a flat. we have plenty of room out side to go for walks as there are wrecks 500m away. So if you have had one what are your experiences or any advice on them?
SupraLEDrears
Had the miniature dacshunds, long haired ones, male and female. Very relaxed but very sharp. If I were to get a dog again, I'd get a dacshund again no questions asked.
Chris Wilson
My pal's wife breeds long haired Dachshunds and I have lost count of the number of times I have been bitten on the shins, calves and ankles by the little bleeders I believe some strains are more working dogs, and some more domesticated. Hers are bred on a working farm so perhaps they are more of a working strain, although my boot has tried to domesticate them a few times When I was a kid my uncle had a smooth haired Dachshund and it was a little darling. I'd have a look and play with both parents to see what their temperament is like Don't forget what they were originally bred for, it may still be very instinctive in them even today. j_jza80
An ex had a pair of them, one was a proper nasty little thing, dont think it had been shown any discipline. The other would bark at everything, and not stop for ages. Get a whippet great dogs, perfect temperament, clean, and dont take up much space (though they do want to be up on the furniture). Equally great with people, other dogs, and even cats (if they've been familiarised with them from a young age). Mine will be 10 in February, had him from 6 weeks old and he really has been the best dog.

They get a bad rep somehow for being associated with racing but in truth they are quiet, affectionate, funny couch potatoes that require about 40 minutes of exercise a day, they literally sleep for 2-3 hours after a 20 minute walk! Hitbox Junkie
Thanks everyone for the great feed back. I dont mind what breed I have as I like all dogs, the misses is set on dachshound. Staffordbull terrier lovely dogs and have a bad reputation thanks to bad owners. Yes chris bread for hunting badgers. Weve considered jack russel as misses used to have them when she was younger and bread them as working dogs. Will keep you all updated in the next couple months.
