TRD3000GT
Ok, I have a complete oil cooler setup now.. 15 row cooler Large Braided lines with all the AN fittings and an adapter for the oil filter with a built in thermostat so when things warm up it opens up.. Im just consdinering if its worth fitting or not... Obviously is a great Extra to have fitted. BUT is it really needed on a VVTI Single turbo supra that has not shown any signs of overheating or anything ever... Any feedback would be great. If I decide not to have it the kit will be for sale.. New oil cooler and nearly new adapter and lines and fittings.
SimonB
Depends. Do you have an oil temp gauge? Do you ever take it on a track?
TRD3000GT
I dont take it on track.. Ive had an oil temp gauge for 3 months in the car just not hooked it up.. Pathetic, I know What are high but acceptable oil tempratures if your running the car hard? How hot it too hot?
Guest Terry S
Do a search, it's been covered. You really do need to know your temps if you are to get a meaningful reply. Mine doesnt need one, but your turbo is only oil cooled where as mine is oil & water cooled. You also need to state the make/type of oil.
Nic
Could fitting an oil cooler on a car that doesn't really need it, be detrimental then Terry?
TRD3000GT
Apparently NOT if its a thermostatically controlled..
Alex
I thought that's why you got a thermostat as well?? As in it only uses the additional cooler if it needs it?
Guest Terry S
Apparently NOT if its a thermostatically controlled.. Assuming the Wax stat never fails....
TRD3000GT
Assuming the Wax stat never fails.... Are they known to ? Never heard of this before ?
Guest Terry S
They are not very complex things(wax stats). TBH if you are tracking the car, go for it, if the oil temps are happily within the capabilities of your oil then its a much harder choice. Oil not getting up to temp is bad for an engine too. TRD3000GT
This is still sitting in my kitchen.... What do you people think fit it or sell it ?
terribleturner
I've got 2 auto coolers and 1 oil cooler all waiting to go on in the next couple of weeks What were the temps like in the summer last year with the 67?? I surpose if it's there and the temps do go too high the stat will come into effect and start to cool things. Better to have a safty measure just incase anything was to happen. That's how i would think
Tricky-Ricky
This is still sitting in my kitchen.... What do you people think fit it or sell it ? Sell it to me cheap! going by my thermocouple temps in the sandwich plate, i was supprised that on normal/town driving i get 100c and up to 112 when on boost so i am inclined to think that the Supra needs a more efficient oil cooler, but i am going by my old s14 temps, and that never went over 95c unless really booted, i did have an old VW once that used to go to 112c. SupraJames
Think I am looking at the same sort of kit, I had to remove my stock oil cooler from behind the pass wheel arch to make room for FMIC pipework. Not sure if the J-Specs come with these anyway, so was told i dont really need it, but because it was there in the first place means something, so will be replacing it with a smaller unit.!!
