Hi all.. heard a funny noise as i was dirving the avensis home tonight... its a very loud knocking, sounds like piston slap or shells. Also, under the cam belt cover i occasionally get a flapping type noise like something hitting the cam belt cover... i took the cover off (couldnt get it completely off as it was dark and its not a very good design) and the belt is well loose.. i can move it probably 15-20mm each way...

Anyone got any ideas what could have happened? I know the came belt hasnt snapped but if perhaps a tensioner has come loose could it have slipped the belt and bugered all the timing up, causing the massive knock im getting?

Cheers

Tensioner could have broken off and be banging about in there down by the crank. Of the bit of the crank pulley that the cambelt sits in has broken up with similar results. Lets hope the crank pulley bolt is less of a bastard than the Supras because it sounds like it needs to come off :)

One side of the cam belt flapping around like a pair of womens curtains.... I can only assume its thrown a few notches on the cam pulley.

Anyone knw if the avensis 1.8 is a valve safe design? Im having difficulty finding out.
