supra87
Evening chaps I've come across a relatively cheap bmw gearbox from a e46 330d. I know the e46 m3 6 speed and the e39 530d boxes are used for the auto/Manuel conventions but has anyone come across the 330d box being fitted any advice will be much appreciated. Bladerider
I know several people with them. So far I think three have been lunched - two by the same car, although i know a fair few getrag M Boxes that have died, but fortunately we can get them rebuilt now !! Im not convinced of the BMW conversions as much now theres lots out there getting trashed !! lol
supra87
We're they defo the 330d e46 box ? Good thing about the bmw boxes is when they do break they can be replaced for pence compared to the supra boxes
Swampy442
All Ill say mate is be careful with diesel boxes, the ratios don't suit petrol cars/diffs
supra87
Yes this was my concern aswell I deffo don't want to start messing with different diffs
and1c
I am seriously considering doing this down the line. E46 M3 gearbox I reckon, and it would hopefully handle my power goals with no problems.
T2 MSW
Ive just got the 420g gearbox to do this myself. The box from the 330 is only a 220g and not rated the same as the M3 boxes.

phobos
Correct, the 420G is a Getrag box. As far as I know both E39 530d and E46 330d have the GS6-53DZ 5spd. The ratio of the first 2 gears is a little bit off. You can prolly just forget using 1st gear. GS6-53DZ ratios: 5,08 2,8 1,78 1,26 1 0,84 V160 ratios: 3,82 2 1,685 1,312 1 0,793 There's many people in Norway / Sweden a GS6-53DZ with decent power levels (>1000hp and prolly >1000Nm) without issues

and1c
Thanks, what else is required for this conversion? Has anyone got details of a good kit? I like the 2nd gen cd009 (I think it is) Nissan 350z tranny, they are meant to be very stout, but it requires cutting the tranny bellhousing it and welding it to a supra one iirc, not interested in doing that! Bladerider
Well, The BMW box swap was big news a few years ago in drifting - which is my background - but they have also been going bang quite alot, including my own team mates builds. Personally I have already got a pair of CD009 gearboxes ready to go, one might get a Speedtek gearset upgrade for unbreakability, but ultimately I might habe just bought a Samsonas sequential so we'll see. Either way I dont thnk Im going to bother going the BMW route as they might be cheap to replace, but continued failure at events costs more than the box savings anyway, perhaps different on a road car. and1c
Interesting info mate thanks . Any info on the CD009 conversions? sounds by far the better option but looks a PITA to do.
