Health check after de-cat, before making changes...

When I get a spare minute I want to give my car a health check:

Basically since getting the car (TT J-spec 96), it’s being running really well at just under 1 bar consistently, but after de-catting (2.5” SS 2 part pipe) it I was possibly slightly disappointed since I am still making the same boost levels (and so similar performance) at the expense of a lot of extra noise, but I want to persevere with the de-cat of course and make sure I’m getting the most from it!

I have the restrictor ring in place currently, before taking it out and adjusting it (making it bigger or simply not fitting it), I want to do some basic checks to make sure the car is all ok. I want to do this because I understand it’s unusual for the car to be making this boost level with basically no restriction – other than the restrictor ring of course.

So, I’ve been told to check my VSVs by connecting them to 12v and listening for the click of the solenoid – no idea where the wiring is but I’m sure that’s something I can do.

I was also going to check all the piping, making sure it’s all tight and not leaking.

Then I was going to remove my spark plugs and check them. I believe they are the Iridium plugs, but not sure of the make / gap, so that’s something worth checking too I guess.

Beyond this, is there anything else I should check whilst I’m there?

There is no obvious fault with the car (that I can tell of at least). It still goes well, I can feel 1 and then 1+2 turbo’s spinning, there is no smoke, the boost is always bang on the money (slight variation from 0.9 bar on a hot day to .95 bar on a cold day) and it holds well to high RPM. Sometimes during part throttle/part boost in a low gear (2nd say) the car can kangaroo a little - but I think this is unrelated since I've experienced this on other turbo cars.

Check all your air hoses especially if you've replaced any with the silicon stuff...they can split...just enough to leak a bit of boost.

Maybe someone put UK turbo's on your car? They'd not over boost?

Measure your restrictor ring before you cut it...and ask CW via an e-mail if the diameter is right for 1.2bar.

ok cheers, I did wonder if I had standard turbos, still never quite sure why I was getting higher than stock boost with both cats anyway, but I expect they probably are standard j-spec ones - certainly no lag anyway to suggest otherwise.

I will measure the restrictor if I take it out.

Got standard hoses at the moment, worth changing to silicone?

dont worry about your hoses unless they are hard and brittle.........reset your ECU I bet that does the trick :stickpoke

Hey cheers, I'll be doing that ASAP with my fingers crossed it does the trick :D

I thought the ECU relearned - but I guess there is no garantee how long this could take and how long you need to spend driving flat out for it to relearn where it really matters...

Hey what do you know, I reset the ECU (pulled 3 green fuses for a couple of mins) and after it warmed up a couple of blips to high revs in 3rd and it's now running like a dream!!!

Makes me realise just how bad it was running before! It's now pulling like a train and is more responsive - it's like a different animal!

Funny thing is, it actually sounds better now too, hard to explain, more smooth and tuned, less harsh! Much more like when I first got it. I'd wrongly assumed the de-cat had destroyed it's sweet sound!

First blip saw .9 bar but much better performance, after that it started to go up. Now it seems to be just over 1 bar and completely solid, performance is completely different to before! Not found fuel cut yet lol.

Just need to decide if to file out for 1.2 bar or use and ebc now... hmmmm decisions decisions :)

anyway, just wanted to say thanks to everyone, I really am chuffed now :D

If you are seeing over 1 bar now, you should probably wait until the weather gets colder before adjusting the restrictor ring. Once you get really cold temps then you may see an increase in boost pressure. What you don't want to do is adjust it now to 1.2bar and then come winter it starts boosting higher.

Personally I would keep the restrictor as it is and fit a boost controller, so you can adjust things as required. This is how I have mine set up, so I can adjust boost when it's 40C in summer or 4C in winter.

Definitely wait for colder weather before cutting the restrictor ring. Mine runs 1.05 in summer, about 1.1-1.2 now, but constantly hits the 1.25 bar fuel cut when temps get below 10 degrees. Will be getting a new restrictor ring from CW for this winters driving, fuel cut hurts my back and neck!!

Excellent advise guys, I think I'll be doing just that then, it's nice to have a base performance to fall back too, especially if on cold days this will be higher as you say.

Given that I would like an emanage ultimate long term, I'm tempted to install the profec e-01 as an EBC now - even though it might not be the cheapest option - needs some more thought though.

I still can't believe how much difference resetting the ecu made, it's like a different car! Funny how after several hundred miles it hadn't re-learnt new settings - oh well I've learnt my lesson there!

Hey, car was up to 1.1 bar yesteday and pulling like a dream - getting colder already I guess. Definitely noticing a new kinda raspy air intake noise now (noticed it mainly with the window open) - this is normal right? :o
