Squealing Noise!!

Hi guys,

I'm after some help/diagnosis!!

Recently there has been an intermittent squealing noise coming from what I believe, is the front of the car! The symptoms are as follows:

- Whilst driving, every now and again, a squealing noise appears which at times can be loud. With the windows down, it seems to come from the front left and right.

- It appears worse when steering

- Can drive for several miles without any noise so it is completely random.

- No noise during startup or when car is stationary and running idle.

I have checked steering fluid and it is fine. I'm not very technical so in terms of belts etc, I have no idea what to look for!

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Thanks for the advice. I have put tipex on so next time I drive the car I'll check it.

Just checked steering fluid again when engine is hot and it is below where the marker is. Could it be that it needs topped up which is where the noise is coming from?

If the steering fluid needs a fair amount you may have a leak (as it shouldn't get 'used' as such), the front cooler (look in the front bumper at what looks like a kettles heating element, or in the passenger side front air duct for signs of fluid. Or it could be leaking into the steering rack gaitors so check them too, hope it's not this as it's the more costly issue.

I had a crank pulley break up but if you are sure that's not the issue I had a squeal on my Mk3 with a dry viscous coupling on the cooling fan. Ran some oil into the fan and the squeal went. Not sure if the Mk4 has the same viscous drive as the mk3?

Not really lock to lock, mainly half turn. Generally no noise when driving in a straight line. No noises whatsoever when stationary.

I do think that I have a minor leak, I thought it was maybe oil as I have noticed a few drops every now and again on the driveway but it is probably the power steering fluid. I'll top it up with 10k Boost Stop Leak and see if that changes things. I'll update the thread in a few days with how I get on.

Yeah I thought that too, the rear calipers seized last year not long after getting the car.

Does your car have the sliding carrier type, 2 pistons

I'd get them refurbed even if that's not the problem unless they have been done of course

They're prone to the carrier pins seizing as well as the pistons

Well it turns out I'm an idiot! Noise is a chirping noise that in on/off coming from the front near side wheel. Noise goes under braking! Possible wheel bearing issue?

Noises can drive ya mad glad you found the problem

mine was doing this. it was this pipe where its held onto the body by a bracket. replaced the leaking pipe and all is fine now its behind the front air scoop/mesh
