Home CCTV Recommendations?

Afternoon guys,

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction on where to look for a good brand & quality CCTV system for home? sick of damage to property and cars.

I've been having a look online there's so much choice and new technology, it's a little difficult to the untrained, or somebody who is not up to date with the latest CCTV technology. Looked at Costco ones too but not sure if they're any good and how easy the DIY setup would be, think the brand was Swann.

HIKVision, another one a few have mentioned, again not sure which one, as there's so many models out there.

Budget probably around £450 - £500 at a push. Would like to view on phone and picture should be of high quality day and night.

You can do this for quite a little money if you are happy to do the work yourself. I have two systems, one in Romania and the other here. I used the Floureon 8 Ch system which you can pick up for less than £100 with 4 cameras but without hard drive fitted for that price. a 500gb drive is peanuts and takes seconds to fit. The only criticism I have really is the xmeye software for remote viewing, its a bit flaky and you need activeX installed if you want to use a windows OS to view, the android and ios aps seem to work fine though. There is other software out there but I havent had chance to experiment with it yet.

I would upload some screen shots but need to resolve the photobucket thing first.

The one in Romania is running with a mobile broadband service too, have to run No-ip to get round that but that's just fine.

Appreciate the input guys, thanks.

I've been searching high and low over last couple of days, think I'm going to end up going with a HIKvision, pricey but like the look of them and specs, especially the dome one. Ideally would like something you can rotate remotely via phone or controller indoors, but i think those ones are all on the expensive side.

Initially was going to go with an IP setup as its straight forward and simple, but don't like the idea of the media card storage, having to physically go and open camera to keep checking the SD card when retrieving data. I'm on a main road, so motion detection would probably be useless for me? as there are cars passing buy all the time.

Looking into NVR's/DVR packages..

Motion detection is pointless for notifications, but the modern cameras have other smarter methods such as Intrusion detection and line crossing, which you add to a certain section of the cameras view.

im in the security game and you wont go wrong with HikVision. if you get the HD-TVI stuff its got 720p quality at reasonable pricing. setting it up to have remote access on your phone is super easy.

Greg (Sheefa) is using a system called Flir FX and he was showing us the playback and live feed on his phone one day and it looked brilliant (especially the rapid recap), I dont know a huge amount about them but he spoke very highly of that

Sure did Mate, well remembered. It's am awesome system and cameras are only around £150 each.image

For the little extra go 1080, did you look at any of the links i posted?

Yes, some good packages and deals on there, looks like I'm going to go with 1080, think this is the highest out there/best value for money?

You could do worse then looking on ipcamtalk.com, lots and lots of good advice on there.

Here is a link to a thread with my current camera on it.

Link is very helpful, impressed with the HIK images. One thing I can't seem to understand about the IP cameras though, how and where do they store the video? Memory card? if so, do you need to physically get the ladders out to go and remove it to retrieve the data from the cameras?

Ok, some of the Hik cameras do have a memory card slot but you still need to get power to them.

I spent a bit more and went for 4 x 4MP cameras with a 4 Channel NVR with 4 Poe ports. I bought directly from one of the Hik UK Distributors (a favour from a buddy).

The 4 channel Poe means I only run a single cat5 to each camera.

My advice would be buy the best you can afford. Make sure there is decent built in IR illumination (30 m) and check the lens. 2.8mm should give over 90 degree viewing angle but 2.4 will be much more narrow. Be careful.

Listen to Bignum's recommendations and follow his advice. He really does know what he is on about!

I know this is a bit to late as I've just seen this post but I've been installing a Nest outside cam today a customer. They are unreal really good quality all they need is power and then the app. Check them out. They are the bees knees! I can get them for £145 being a sparky from my wholesalers. Live streaming, notifications, record online on their website, zoom, voice activate feature when not at home, sound. Etc

You can use a sdcard in the barbers I've got, but that's normally just for when you have an outage and you can then catch up.

I've a Hik NVR so that records constantly. That means I can then go into it and search for the event to watch.

These can be powered over Ethernet, so you could connect them up and connect to them that way.

You don't need an NVR, you could get a cheap pc and use Blue Iris, which is a pic based NVR.

Lots of different options.
