BoGlE
I've had Norton's for years. Never had a problem with it and it's easy to use. Didn't know there was free AV haha. Would you really wanna risk it if it was free though?
el_bandido
Would not recommend McAfee to anyone. It will slow your computer down more than any virus. If you have windows 10, windows defender is free and works fine. Beyond that, safe internet practice will do you more good; don't download attachments or click links in emails you don't recognise (or if you're very security conscious, use a VM window to interact with the internet), don't visit the dodgy websites, block scripts that run on websites where possible etc. There are plenty of browser ad ins that will help you do this. stevie_b
I wouldn't recommend McAfee or Norton. Some Symantec-branded products are quite good (Symantec endpoint protection for example). I'd suggest Avast if you want something free, or Kaspersky if you don't mind paying.
kevin smith
I would recommend AVG had for years excellent.
Annabella
Kaspersky or eset or sophos branded for paid versions. I have used Kasp int security for 6-7 years and put it on customer builds. If you want free win 10 own is ok if you're not doing financial stuff online. Avast free Ok if free route. As stated above depends on your internet usage, you still have to look at the link before clicking, and padlock etc, otherwise it can render whatever you use redundant. Angarak
From my 20years of building/configuring and troubleshooting PCS for friends and family I would avoid McAfee. Every time I've had to deal with a computer infected with something it's always been running McAfee...it's as much use as a chocolate fireguard in my opinion. BitDefender has some nice features such as designating directories to protect against encryptware. Kaspersky and F-Secure are two other decent options. Wez
If running on Windows then use the free MS supplied software, most 3rd party AV solutions are overweight resource hogs. I use to use and recommend Avast, AVG etc but to be honest they all became bloated over time, some nagging to upgrade to paid versions etc.

This. I gave up 3rd party AV years ago after they all started getting bloaty and seemingly very picky about working nicely with other security software - AVG stopped paying ball with Zonealarm, for example. I have used the built in Windows AV ever since I installed Windows 7 and 8, plus NoScript + common sense in Firefox and never had any issues, even though I stopped applying security updates to my W7 machine well before the Eternal Blue attack this year (but I have patched it since). Ric
Bitdefender for me, really nice and doesent seem to steal resources.

Abz
Sophos, they are now allowing free downloads. The best bit is that it uses the enterprise engine... all for free. We used to get some free licenses for our corporate ones but now they have offered it for free.
Annabella
Interesting, may have to give that a try on my own. Cheers Abz.
