Looking for advice

Hi guys

I've just seen a nice TT come up for sale with 60k on the clock. 1996 JZA80

The pictures look very clean however the car is up for sale at £19000 and is 5 hours from me

This will be the first Supra I look at and don't want to make the wrong decision by rushing in, but I know they don't keep on stock for long

Can anyone briefly tell me what to look out for (I guess the car is an import - but already seems to be on UK plate) aswell as tell me what sort of price level to expect as they all vary

The problem is have is my age - I'm 24 but look a lot younger. I have spoken with insurance and they'll insure me for 650/year. So I'm hoping I'll be taken seriously as cash in pocket ready To go

Buying a Supra, really depends what you are looking to do with it. Have it as a daily runner, a second car that will likely return you a profit should you sell on at some point in the future or something of a canvas to stick a big turbo and massive brakes onto and have some track fun in your life. The answers would be different as investible comes down to colour choice and originality and daily runner would come down to history and reliability and for a track car you'd want good strong mechanicals as a starting point.

Maybe if you disclose what area of the country the car is located some community inspired member would accompany you and be able to help you evaluate the car against what your expectations are.

Hi guys

Hi :)

I've just seen a nice TT come up for sale with 60k on the clock. 1996 JZA80

The pictures look very clean however the car is up for sale at £19000

Do you have a link to the for sale add as most likely a few on here will know the car and can offer an opinion

and is 5 hours from me

5 hours is nothing whats a days travelling to find a great example and what your wanting in such a great iconic car

This will be the first Supra I look at and don't want to make the wrong decision by rushing in

Great advice to yourself, you see less available for sale these days so is easy just to jump on anything available but you may regret that when one comes up more to what your after or better condition etc... hold out for the right one :)

Can anyone briefly tell me what to look out for (I guess the car is an import - but already seems to be on UK plate) aswell as tell me what sort of price level to expect as they all vary

From new there was only just over 600 UK models made so most you will find will be imported from Japan yes, Mawby has done an excellent guide as for what to look for on the link below...

http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?67644-What-to-check-when-buying-a-Supra

Price guide is hard to say without seeing the advert on the car but you'd expect a TT6 to be somewhere in the region of £16-£20k

I currently drive a 2010 M3 - with varying 0-60 times on the internet, does anybody know if this year/engine will be similar speed wise?

It is a massively different car to compare the 2 and I haven't driven an M3 so I cant really comment to strongly on this but with a Supra you have alot of potential with what ou want to do with it and high power figures can be seen even on stock internals

The problem is have is my age - I'm 24 but look a lot younger. I have spoken with insurance and they'll insure me for 650/year. So I'm hoping I'll be taken seriously as cash in pocket ready To go

Any seller should be taking any buyer seriously, even if only 17 years old you could have won the lottery for all the seller knows :)

Good luck with your search :)

Thanks Guys for all the great response. Car Ad is listed below and pictures are attached.

In regards to comparing it to the M3, i just want a car that is really fun to drive and that is quick in a straight line and the look of the supra has always been gorgeous.

I'll take a read of the buying a supra guide.

Looks clean, mot says it was carried out (1st uk one) last July with 100772km on clock. 62616 miles.

It could have never been driven in that time and they are round down the millage, or something has been changed. I'd ask over the phone what the exact figure on the clock currently is.

You need to be asking questions relating to if any major parts have been replaced, just one example, intercooler fins crumble to dust with age, so if its

still got the original one fitted factor that in as a new one from Toyota is approx £1k if you can still get it, other SMICs are £600 ish

Heres what i had back from them just now

Hi there yes this is a recent import, in UK we are the first keepers from registration and there were 2 Japanese owners, the mileage is verified and genuine and the car doesn't require any work.

I'll try ring them later and get some more info

I think at one time there were far more pics of this available and it did look clean (not just bodywork but underneath, engine bay etc too)

Have you got access to loads of pics?

No mate that's all they sent me!

Bare in mind I'm nearly 44, but I like the auto, swung between both over the years, stuck now with auto now really as for me it's not worth the premium the manuals are now.

The price doesn't seem that bad in the current climate (not a lot else out there cheaper?), it was relatively more expensive last year, coming into the normal range now. Condition though is key, 1996 cars can be miles apart and many many thousands of pounds might have to be spent to get one comparable to another. So for me with the dross getting pulled up on the coat tails of the general (and particularly fresh import) prices it's even more important to be more patient and pay the bit extra and get a nice clean one especially if you are in it for the long haul.

Pics of the inside - i was under the impression that it came with leather on this model?

No, leather is a rare option on facelift cars. Only GZ models had leather as standard in Japan. That one is likely an RZ-S, and by the look of the passenger seat would likely have been fitted with 'confetti' Recaro seats from the factory.

I would be extra careful when considering any car for sale with a dealer in that area of Yorkshire, while there are good dealers, the area has a reputation for dodgy car dealers, and I have seen some truly shocking things come from dealers in that area. While on that subject, pretty much avoid anything advertised in the high Wycombe area. :)

Performance wise, when you fit 'BPU' mods to the Supra, it's performance will be in the same ballpark as your M3.

Seeing as they've come up in another post, avoid cars in Keighley too!

I would check that quote is for an import Supra and not a UK spec which is cheaper to insure. Unless it's a classic or restrictive policy £650 seems a little cheap for a 24 y/o, mine is only a little cheaper than that at 32 with 10+ years NCB

Last question guys

Is it better to buy standard, or to buy one with all the BPU done already?

How much does the BPU cost overall and are there enough specialists around

SRD in Sussex are busy but could easily do the bpu work, it's going to be a lower cost getting a car with it already done, there is always the issue though of how hard a life it's already had? but they are hardy so should be fine and you can't be sure the 'stock' car hasn't been turned back to stock rather than always being stock!

Decats, exhaust, fcd, plugs fuel pump etc etc all add up to many hundreds even if diy'ing the fitting.
