Rywalls
Okay so the car is a 1999 TT VVTI. Few months ago I was driving to work when I came to a stop at the bottom of the slip road and the car cut out. Started again straight away and drove to work about half a mile away. After my shift finished the car wouldn't start. Initially checked the spark plugs made sure they weren't wet, checked the fuel pump all was okay. Jumped the car and it started but was only running on 4 cylinders. Took the leads off and the car kept running, checked the voltage on the battery and found the alternator wasn't charging it. Now the alternator has been refurbished, brand new battery fitted and the car still won't start at all. Double checked fuelling and getting a spark from each lead from the coil packs. It sounds like it's trying it's best and spluttering away, bit of black smoke coming from exhaust showing burning fuel (the car was running very rich initially) Anyone had this problem before or any ideas of what else to check to rule out? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Located in County Durham
girth45
Maybe crank sensor .
kevin smith
I had an over fuelling problem, but there was a lot of black smoke and wouldn't run, turned out to be the ECU at fault. So replaced the ECU problem sorted.
Rywalls
I thought I must have disturbed something whilst checking plugs or fuel pump like. I'll check the crank sensor next thanks! When the car was running it was never chucking any black smoke out, got a mini fpr waiting to go on to lean it out a little
samm
Have you checked the crank pulley?
Mike2JZ
Normally if your crank sensor is causing issues then you shouldn't be getting spark at the coils. But definitely worth checking anyway Couple of sensors you can try checking, which could lead to the symptoms you explained. - MAP Sensor (Check plug is getting voltage and the vac line from intake is not split) - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (Check plug hasn't come loose, and check resistances of the sensor. If the sensor fails then the ECU could be overfueling due to thinking its a lot colder outside than it is) - Intake air temperature sensor (Check plug has not come loose). - Check the grounds under your intake, make sure none are loose. When it's running does it sound like the timing is out, or is it just misfiring?
Rywalls
Great thanks Mike I'll check all of them... It doesn't actually even start at the minute, it tries its best it's hard to explain. it has plenty of crank and sounds as if it's about to fire away on a couple of cylinders but then gives up and keeps cranking if you know what I mean
Dave
I went through this couldn't figure what it was in the end after it cost me many bucks it was just the earthing ,took the coil off cleaned the earthing points ,cleaned out the dizzy cap ,and it started first time oh yeah and the bunch of earth wires next to the coil.
