Brian888
Got a question about the material under the bonnet in a JDM model. Is this primarily to keep heat from warping the bonnet and maybe a bit of sound insulation? Is there any drawback from removing it? Only ask as mine is becoming very brittle, worried bits are going to start flaking off in the future. Do people replace these or generally safe enough to just remove. Thanks! Delboy52
Seemed like the same stuff used in loft insulation.
Sheefa
Mine is brittle too but I carefully cut away any frayed bits with a stanley. Better to keep as much of it as possible than not. You never know when it might come in use.
Frank Bullitt
highly doubt it. I didn't know when they stopped using Asbestos as bonnet insulation, it was a genuine question.
MattP
As we all saw on the recent Supra fire on that blokes white Supra the blanket did sweet F-ALL Better off carrying a small fire extinguisher but even then unless you have the right type and catch it early enough they are pretty useless as well... Yeah think it's safe to say this is not a fire blanket at all and is just to help protect the bonnet from normal engine bay heat.
Brian888
I'm not surprised. Mine looks more like kindling right now. Anyone running a stock bonnet without it and any issues with the heat?
SupraD06
Took mine off years ago and never had any issues.
MattP
I still have mine on the current Supra but on my last two Supras I pulled it off the only difference was if it rained after/during use it would evaporate off quickly or if it snowed the snow would melt quickly off the bonnet. No paint damage was observed.
Mika
It is a fire blanket and it does work as a sound & heat insulator too. I took mine off a 10 years ago as it damaged during the removal, no paint or any other damages occured yet. However, I bought a new one but I have not installed it yet. Guest Rsb
I feel you've not installed it, would you consider self it?
Mike2JZ
I've seen one catch on fire from being near a heat wrapped single turbo down pipe. Removed mine ages ago with no draw backs
