easyrider
Ive just been to look at a UK Supra TT auto,i was very impressed with it but it didnt seem to have the same "kick" when the turbo's came on song as what my Impreza (MY98 UK with Dawes device)does-is this due to it being an auto and being more refined/smoother than what im used to????? Anyone noticed the same thing?????
nick_karkie
never really driven a subaru but I know when my first turbo came in on my supra it was awesome and regularly caned subaru's, and although its been said many times that a subaru would beat a supra away from the lights along with other cars like a GTiR etc, I have never been beaten by any car, maybe due to bad driving on their part, porsche boxster S was no match. Can I ask if you had it in manual mode and used the gears? There should be a very slight pause then the power kicks in, and the 0-60 figures suggest that there is very little difference between the TT 6-sp and the TT auto. Branners
On a stock twin turbo the kick will not be as noticeable as it runs a sequential mode where the first turbo spools up from the exhaust gas from the 6 cylinders and then at about 4000rpm it opens up the second turbo as well. If the car is running right it should be a smooth transition with a minor kick. Once the car is tuned it becomes a different matter, the kick from the second turbo is big enough to break traction in most conditions. Need4Speed
A very poor Supra, a very quick Subaru, or both?
nick_karkie
my sup was tuned to 1.1 bar at the time, subaru was the quick sti version, dont know about other supras but when my first turbo came in it would take off nearly as noticeably (spell??) as the second. easyrider
I did have it in "manual" mode and auto-dont get me wrong-the sup was quick-it just that it all happened so smoothly that it got me wondering-ive also driven the supra that Redline magazine built and that was mildly tuned and the "kick" was more pronounced---but my mildly tuned subaru still felt much quicker off the mark(0-40 ish). Steve Cargill
I think a lot of it has to do with the size of the car. I''ve had a Daimler V12 (6.9 to 60) and my mate had a Merc S600 (6.3 to 60) but they felt soooo much slower that slower, smaller, nippier cars. Above about 40mph I would just drive past UK Scoobies and I was evenly matched with an STi (2 door, blue, gold wheels, odd looking) upto about 120 leptons. Difference being I had my slippers on smoking a pipe Not wishing to start a big debate here, but IMHO the Supra is more of a GT car, whereas the Scooby is a thrash-the-tits-drive-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type. I have the Supra as it's a comfortable every day commuting car that happens to be V quick. Effortless power I think is an appropriate phrase. nick_karkie
In my supra I love when there is a two lane entry to a motorway and all the cars are in the left hand lane, you just floor it and fly past all of them, gives me a buzz doing that, just seem to kick past 10 cars inabout 4 or 5 secs and I love seeing some of their faces when I look in the rear view mirror. Funniest look I ever saw was when the Porsche Boxter S was behind me while we were both in the overtaking lane of a dual carriageway, he had a big grin on his face thinking that when the cars in front of me moved over and I moved over that he would fly past, turned out to his poor embarassment that by the time I had floored it to 80 he was 4 car length back, and becuase he was embarassed he stayed well back going about 60 mph, so I slowed down for him so I could see the look on his face (dejected and owned), made my day. Just because his car is called a porsche he thought he was the b***ox, but I would hardly rate a boxster alongside a 911 carrera, but unfortunately the people who buy them do. Andrew
As Branners says the Supra was designed that way, with the sequential setup. I have modded mine from stock, and just taking out the second cat and adding an induction kit will give the 2nd turbo more of a kick, all for about £800 of mods Having driven an Auto and 6 speed there also doesn't appear to be any difference imho in that respect. Justin
Not being funny but did you ease the throttle or stamp on it? With my auto it took me a while to learn how to get a pretty instant kick in the seat you may be looking for mate. So try driving it normally then stamp on the throttle. This should impress. If not you probably need to look at a Zonda or Maclaren F1 :flame Dev J.
easyrider
I tried pulling away several times, each time doing it differently, but judging by the replies so far it seems that it was working as it should do-the car is bog std at the end of the day(smooth power delivery). I think the reason why it didnt seem like much of a "kick" is because i had just driven 50 or so miles in my scoob in the nice cool/dense air of the early morning(which all of you must know can make quite a difference)+the fact that the scoob is a ":devil:balls out:devil:" type of drive with none of the refinments/comfort of the supra. What i have learnt from this is that there can be a HUGE difference between two types of high power car on how they put their power onto the tarmac.
