pete.osborne69
I've had these installed just over a year now and decided to relocate the fuse box and battery so have redone the wiring for these twin fans Now originally i had the live in the diagram below just inserted to the live in the stock fan connector Had no problems After the rewire (could have possibly done this wrong, if i have it's the only thing Inc. the wipers lol). The diagram below shows the instructions from the fan controller i bought and is for 1 fan only not twin fans There is a diagram of my current setup and an alternative My question is i know it is better to have one relay per fan incase one blows the other should keep running, have i done this correctly
pete.osborne69
The 12 V live i used is the 30A fuse in the fusebox for the original fan setup However it keeps running the fans when the engine is off no matter the temperature What i would like to have is this setup but the fans turn off with the engine if it is below the temp specified and to keep running with the engine off if it is higher Any help is appreciated Thanks is advance
Chris Wilson
Fans should STOP running if you disconnect either of the two wires to the relay energising coil that are not connected to ground. If they still run it looks like the relay is wired incorrectly or the contacts welded closed. Both circuit diagrams should work if the current draw of the fans is under (well under, ideally), the current capacity of the relay. The thermostat takes a 12V + feed and a ground and when over a certain temp grounds the other terminal, turning on the fans by connecting their -ve side to chassis ground. In fact I am not really sure why the thermostat would need a 12V + feed... Edited April 10, 2017 by Chris Wilson (see edit history)
pete.osborne69
could the 12V live on the thermostat be for keeping the fans running when the engine switched off after a long run for further cooling. And would the supra benefit from the fans still running after engine switch off (like a Jag s-type) or would that be pointless?
Chris Wilson
Possibly, what do the instructions say? Letting the fans run for a while on shut down may help engine bay temps, but I wouldn't bother myself. But I would never change a viscous engine driven fan for electric in the first place. This is the best use of electric rad fans, IMO:
pete.osborne69
The instructions that came with the thermostat is the top let wiring diagram above and some other text but nothing about keeping it running. And if you wouldn't bother i will leave it as is also i wouldn't have gone to electric fans if the original viscous one hadn't been shredded when my crank pulley snapped and destroyed it Thanks for your help though, it's appreciated and i have learnt a couple of things in the process, so that's a bonus
Chris Wilson
No worries, make sure the fans pull air from the front and blow toward the engine, I see a few wired backwards, and they kind of don't work very well puffing against the air stream....
