Help, na engine problem

boostman

Recommended Posts

Started the car this morning and the engine is vibrating and shaking,

It sounds ok (but rougher), so don't think it's a miss fire.

Could it be the crank pully?

It was fine yesterday did 300 miles and didn't miss a beat.

If there's anyone near Rugeley that could help diagnos this that would be amazing as this is my daily.

Thanks a lot!

Do the tipex test on the pulley

Inspect the cap and leads on the dizzy, take the cap off and check the rotor arm and inside the cap

If it has a missfire you can possibly narrow it down to a cylinder by removing each plug lead from the dizzy cap one at a time

and seeing if that affects the tick over.

OK so the middle steel part will become detached from the pully?

Eventually the pulley where the belt sits will separate from the steel center part which will stay bolted

to the crank

Put a line across and run the engine, if the line separates your pulley is shot

Better not to drive it. You will get loss of power steering and such unless you have a mate follow you at quiet time. Get a febest 1/2jz crank pulley for around 100 of ebay..had mine over a year and its fine.

Thanks, is that a dampened pully?

It's much cheaper than a toyota one, is febest a reputable make?

I wouldn't even consider that pulley. OEM is the way forward, even if you get a good used one off keron or somebody on here..

Alternatively there is more expensive after market ones from Titan etc

OK had a look, it seams the cam cover seal has gone.... Again, would oil on the plugs cause a misfire?

I just can't see the crank pully making the engine run like it is.

Iv only ever heard a 4cyl misfire and it sound nothing like that.

On my old NA engine, I once had the throttle coolant pipe come loose and fill my spark plug wells with coolant. The moment the engine got hot the engine misfired like crazy.

Potentially oil could create the same affect.

Crank pulley coming loose should not cause a misfire. Typically it will cause all the auxillary systems like water pump/alternator etc to start acting dodgy.

Start by replacing your cam cover seals, clean out your spark wells and clean your spark plugs at HT leads.

OK so got the plugs out and 1-5 are ok but number 6 has a hard rough coating. Check all for continuity and It and there in good condition.

Cleaned them up and put them back in, now changing the cam cover gasket.

Any idea what number 6 plug is indicating?
