Supra_cooper
Hi I hope this isn't a silly question but i wanna get a TT engine to go in to a aerotop but when looking online there seems to be a vvti version and a 2jz that isn't out of a supra. First question is the vvti any better or worse as the non vvti. 2nd question is there a way to make sure that when buying a 2jz GTE that i get one out of a supra. conorj
Easiest way to tell if it is a supra VVTI engine is by the sump position, Supra is at the rear, aristo is at the front. Most 2JZ VVTi engines for sale these days are from an aristo.
Supra_cooper
Thanks is there any difference between the engine's in power or reliability. Also is there a difference between vvti and non vvti regarding power and reliability.
Scooter
Not much, the vvti is meant to have a stronger low/mid range torque from (unsurprisingly the variable cams!) The VVTi's can have an issue with their throttle potentiometers as they are a sort of fly by wire system not 100% a direct throttle cable setup. It can cause stalling, weird idle, poor starting etc.
Chris Wilson
Unless you have plans for an aftermarket ecu and playing with cam timing and DBW settings on different throttle bodies i would go for a none VVTi as the VVTi's have their own issues that outweigh the supposed advantages in the torque. Personally I suspect VVTi was introduced more to meet emission regulations than for drivability. An engine loom for a Supra MKIV TT won't directly mate with an Aristo ecu and vice versa, be sure to get everything you need from the donor car otherwise much aggro is caused. That's what used to be said on the Yank forum, until they discovered that the VVti heads are much superior for spooling the big single turbos up. Now they rave about them, and its pretty much a must have on the big money builds. Sensibly, they ditch the overly complicated and troublesome stock ETCS-i semi dbw throttle in favour of a more traditional cable setup or a true DBW assembly. For me, if I was looking for a Supra using stock turbos, stick with non vvti. But if planning a turbo conversion with different management etc, vvti without the stock throttle (whifbitz dbw conversion on pre vvti plenum is perfect)
