My Diff Crisis, All Sorted With Pics :)

So a few of you know before xmas the Supra did a right number on me, but breaking one of the worst things to go, being the diff. Parts for them are very rare and expensive.

One of the gears broke off during a launch wedging itself in the ring gear locking the wheels ruining the pinion and snapping the prop shaft well 3 months later and a solid day picking up completed parts and fitting, I finally have the on road with with an uprated prop, OS Giken diff, US spec pinion kit, solid shift bush and uprated rear diff bushes.

A massive thanks to Lee Perryman and team at SRD for building my diff with some of the required parts so quickly, supplying me with the uprated SRD prop and all the advice.

Paul Whiffin at Whibitz for supplying diff parts, the os giken diff and all the time taken with helping.

Dan at my local Toyota for the pinon kit and track rods (damaged during recovery)

And my work colleague (boss) Alex staying later after work yesterday to help with the start of the work on the car, me using his tools today and all the help with getting the stuff over the past few months.

Well what else better than pictures now I guess.

After removing the back plate, we found this

Pinion trashed :(

The remaining of the broken gear caused he damage to the pinon and crown

I had the case sand blasted

Os Giken Turned up

Painted the case to prevent rusting and to make it look more presentable

I also hand rubbed down the back plate to remove corrosion and painted that to suit the case

Inner of the back plate all cleaned and inspected

USA final drive kit

Mt GF drove all my parts to Lee and the team at SRD to rebuild the diff

As the rear wheels locked and the engine was still going it snapped the prop.

Alex and I replaced both track rods, gators and clips

image

Alex Fitted some aftermarket rear diff bushes that I manged to get hold of.

Diff back in

I changed my shifter bushes to solid ones due to how worn my OEM ones were.

What a pig it was to remove this.

Ouch!! Still you have one of the best diffs available now and a great new prop too! Happy days.

What were the make of the diff mounts mate as I'm looking at replacing mine and don't know what to get.

Glad it's all sorted and see you at Japfest.

What a mess! but glad you got it sorted.

I am just hoping that mine is the bearings as you said because mine is only whining still drives perfect.

What do SRD charge for a diff build only if I supply all the parts the casings will be pre shot blasted and painted?

The problem now is Toyota no longer stock the side shims, which is why I asked if you had the originals. if they are too thick I can grind them on the surface grinder, if too thin i have to use my very limited stock of used ones if thick enough, or my even lower stock of laser cut ones, which were expensive, and surface grinding is time consuming. So for a full rebuild like yours i would say "250 plu VAT, maybe more if lots of grinding needed.
