djmakz
Hi guys, managed to sort out few issues I had with dashboard electrics, still there are few left and I am at lost. 1. RH Telltale (check engine, ABS, oil) 83950-14010 - it simply doesnt work. Managed to take it apart, all bulbs ok. There seems to be voltage on at least one line on the harness (got 12v on one and 0.9v on another, cant remember which one is which one, will have a look later on). All solders look fine, board itself look fine. Any tests I can make? Are there any common faults with it? If I got voltage coming in on the harness, shall I safely assume a replacement will fix it? See pic 1 and 2. 2. Digital clock 83910-14400 - apparently quite common issue. Again - it doesnt work. Got power on the harness, but clock is dead. The screen got a small burn out in the corner (see pic 3). I wouldnt imagine there is an easy fix for this one and its nearly impossible to get hold of another one at reasonable cost. Has anyone done any conversions or have you got other ideas what to do? My new radio got a clock built in, but at a cost of song titles, so I still would prefer to have a clock there if possible. 3. Defogger light - defogger works fine, but confirmation led is not coming on. I managed to take this module apart and test leds - all good. Still, defogger is operational, does the job fine, but no light is coming on. All other confirmation leds are working correctly, only this one (see pic4). Any help or ideas will be greatly appriciated.
Kev.O
Regarding the RH cluster, this is almost certainly a dry joint, do you have a soldering iron you can run across all the ribbon cable joints?
djmakz
Hi Kev, thanks for the reply. Do you mean these? Is there a particular one I should try since nothing works? Like ground or something. I got the diagram for the harness, but havent checked if the order on the cable is the same. I do have a soldering iron, but Ive used it once in my life. Anyway - will try it tomorrow and will update if it helps.
djmakz
Hello again. As an update for the RH cluster - I have resoldered all ribbon joints and checked continuity and all still seems to be fine. I can light up the bulbs from the socket. Once in the car harness though not a single light. I have checked the harness and could only find 12v in ECM (cable 3 on diagrams) and 0.25v in the other ECM (cable 4). Should I expect 12v on any other cables? See attached for the diagram of the continuity (may be useful for others, apologies for my ignorance in electric diagram making!). djmakz
Heyy, partial success. The unit is fine, but during refitting one of the lights have blinked. That pointed me to playing with harness a bit more and it turned out some cables are damaged just behind the harness. When connected at one certain angle it makes a connection and both oil lights came up. I will have to redo the harness and hopefully this will resolve the problem. Still - not sure how to redo it and not sure what lights shall I expect when the car is off, in ignition or when turned on? Could anyone send me a quick video with the procedure? I would be most grateful.
stevie_b
When the car is off or engine running, you'd expect no lights IIRC. With the ignition on (ancilliaries on, but engine not running), you'd expect all lights to come on - it acts as a kind of circuit test. Jellybean
I had the same issue , was just dry solder Quick Q on the heater controls , the bulbs/holders I presume are all one piece and only available from Toyota ? I could not pry the bulbs out for the holders
djmakz
Thanks Stevie. Jellybean, I actually got an issue with heater control light too. My predecessor already soldered normal 12v led bulbs onto it and they died. I aim just to swap em out, as there is solder on the connection so trying to clean it up would prob cause more mess. So - an idea, but more of a one way road. Will stick a pic later on when I'll get on with actually doing it as new bulbs came in just now. Jellybean
Thanks ! I will probably just send mine off to Heckler for his LED conversion over the winter
djmakz
Forgot to take a pic during work! Its just 2 of these soldered in and placed in the controller circle: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262762466125?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=561727685991&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT 3mm constant blue I got (as the rest of my dash is in blue). Works fine.
djmakz
As another update, while working on the temp dial I have resoldered all defogger light connections and it was all needed to get it back to work. I have also decided to try to install some similar sized chinese digital clock. With a bit of luck I may get it to work. As to the telltale's harness, I'll take it to electrician to redo. As a test I have managed to hold cables in place and start a car. Lights go off (so at least I know no serious issues with the car), but no ABS light. It either doesnt work or... has all Supras had ABS installed as standard?
stevie_b
Not all supras have ABS
