Viscous fan problem

I lifted the bonnet today and happened to notice a chunk missing out of my fan cowling

 

Looking on the inside there are also score marks from where it seems the fan has been making contact

 

Fan is still hole with no signs of damage, no movement in the fan setup at all, even with the engine idling it seems to be running true and not wonky

 

Any ideas what could have happened?

 

I dont want to drive and risk a failure, but its strange how idling and a few revs on the spot there seems to be no issues, to damage this part it would have to move a fair amount

 

Can see in the photo where its worn from the inside, outside of the hole looks a bit more severe as i have pulled some of the melted plastic off

rad moving at speed? the none OEM mount you can see in the picture, does that push it more into the fan than OEM?

 

Is the rad sat in the doughnuts properly and the clamps fully level and screwed down?

 

The rad seems to be sat correctly at the bottom and both top brackets look fine also

 

The bodged bracket on the cowling is just a temp fix until my carbon shroud is fitted, but the cowling is flush with the rad how it should be and doesnt move

 

Id rather it mash this cowling than a carbon one though so maybe i could set my gopro up in the engine bay somehow and go for a drive

Ok have checked the car

 

No movement at all in the radiator or the fan cowling

 

I did think possibly engine mount but to hit where it has, the engine would need to move forward by the looks of it

 

Ive been out today and the hole is now visibly worse if you compare the below image to the one above

Also if i pull a fan blade forward by hand it lines up perfectly

Any ideas??

Here's my theory:

When revving high the fan will be sucking air in. This sucking force could be pulling the shroud slightly towards the fan and causing contact.

 

Failing that, it could be a mix of engine movement and using an Na fan? I was under the assumption that the TT fan is slightly different.

 

Have you checked that the 12mm nuts holding the fan to the pump are tight? Might also be worth checking if the 10mm nuts holding the fan to the viscous are tight/not damaged

Hmm i will look into this fan stuff then, the fan came from keron when i removed twin fans but never mentioned what car it was off, he knew i had a TT though

 

Everything is tight yer, first thing i checked

 

I find stones laying around my undertrsy sometimes. One could have been kicked in and flicked up by the fan propelling it through the shroud.

 

No under trays on my car, plus its getting worth every drive
