Tricky-Ricky
Long story short, i had to download windows 7 as the original became corrupted, and for some reason i could not use the windows software to download the software, so i just used a generic and got the usual "this copy of windows is not genuine" message as it wont accept the built in license! but i can get rid of and the accompanying restrictions and message, But now its come back along with some more restrictions which i cant seem to get rid of with the usual work arounds, and the files that i need to access are either not there of i cannot change despite taking control in permissions etc, and removeWAT cant access them either, any ideas? I am damned if i am going to purchase yet another version of windows.
ibby
You need to download the OEM copy. What machine is it ?
stevie_b
This suggests you can use a full (Microsoft call it "retail") version of Windows 7, with the sticker license that came with your laptop ("OEM license") https://techingiteasy.wordpress.com/2012/04/13/how-to-activate-windows-7-oem-license-using-a-retail-disc/ You'll need to use the correct version though - for example, if your sticker is a license for Windows 7 Home Premium, you won't be able to use a Window 7 Professional installation media. If you need a copy of Windows 7 installation media, I've got some of them at home. Let me know what you need and whether you want 32-bit or 64-bit. They used to be freely downloadable from Microsoft's partner (Digital River), buit I don't think they're available anymore.
Tricky-Ricky
I have tried the download center but it just gives a error when my product key is typed in, and it says that some pre installed versions are no longer supported, so if that's going to be the case will i have to buy another windows disc? Buying another disc really shouldn't be necessary. I'm certain that you can install Windows 7, using the sticker license on your laptop. If you take a photo of the sticker license, I'll find a cd-rom image you can use to install it. If I send you a link to a large ISO file, do you have the ability to burn it to a blank cd-rom (easiest), or bootable USB stick (quickest, but more technical)? I would urge you make a backup of your personal files - documents, photos, videos, music, etc.
Frank Bullitt
Annabella (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/member.php?45765-Annabella) was great at helping me find a solution with a PC laptop I bought when I had issues.
Annabella
Was thinking this sounds familiar! Ricky have a look at the COA sticker and PM me the version, and I need to know the original version you have as in 64-bit or 32-bit. How much ram does your laptop have? If it has more than 3 or 4GB then it would have had 64 bit. Realistically these days with activating the OEM code will work with 64 or 32 but helps to be sure. Just definitely need to know what it says on the sticker. Then I'll burn you a DVD for install. Once installed etc (you'll need to do a full clean install so backup anything on there now) when activating it may auto activate over the internet or you'll need to do the telelphone activation service, choose UK, ring it choose telephone not smartphone activation as a home user for windows activation. Follow the prompts. If you're feeling like you want to speed it up, stick an SSD drive in and fresh install on that instead, it'll honestly make your laptop as fast as an Ipad. http://www.fulwoodcomputers.co.uk/solid-state-drives/ Buy from scan or amazon https://www.scan.co.uk/products/120gb-hynix-sl308-25-ssd-sata-iii-6gb-s-tlc-read-560mb-s-write-460mb-s-90k-83k-iops-retail https://www.scan.co.uk/products/250gb-hynix-sl308-25-ssd-sata-iii-6gb-s-tlc-read-560mb-s-write-490mb-s-100k-85k-iops-oem
Tricky-Ricky
Thanks guys, yes sounds familiar, but this time its my laptop and not the wife's, its an older Acer aspire, so not really worth throwing an SSD at it, i had a really bad slow down issue, so tried to reinstall windows 7 but the Microsoft software wouldn't allow me to download an iso for it so i just picked up a generic copy of ultimate and installed that, it had home premium originally that's why this one is throwing the activation card. I have always been able to get rid of all the annoying messages and other restrictions, but this time i cannot access or fin the related files i need to stop it, i think my meddling has compounded the problem, so that's why i am in the current position, although i would much rather just get rid of the problem, it would be much less hassle. Thanks Annabella (again) for the offer of help, i will PM you the details, on an activation note i thought that the pre installed versions should auto activate when the system is re installed? Annabella
Was last time windows 8? Win 8 onwards does auto activate, windows 7 sometimes does sometimes doesn't. As long as everything matches version wise it will activate one way or another, bit like blondie. Have you checked the hard drive for why you had a slow down? As in bad sectors?
