Glanza_Mike
Evening chaps, I've removed my cam covers this week to clean them up, paint and fit new gaskets etc Went to to re fit this afternoon and heard a rattle in the baffle of the inlet cam cover. Is this considered normal or is there something in there that I need to get out? I've shaken it around loads and whatever is rattling will not fall out by just shaking. Thanks. safcdixon
Did you torque the bolts up? I had this type of thing last year after fitting new covers and gaskets, i thought i had a top end knock after a quick drive turned out they hadnt been nipped up correctly
Glanza_Mike
Nor fitted them yet mate, they are off the car still. When I shake the cam cover in my hand I can hear a rattle
j_jza80
Did you remove and refit the baffle?
Scooter
Does it still have the little (breather?) valve thing in it where a pipe comes out to the intake manifold?
Glanza_Mike
Haven't touched the baffle Jason no. And scooter yea it does mate, still has the standard breather attachment going to the intake.
Scooter
That attachment has a metal piece in it with a one way valve that might rattle? You could hold it by it and you may feel the rattle through it?
Chris Wilson
The PCV valve that sits in the rubber grommet has a very lightly spring loaded ball valve in it. It will, and should, rattle if shaken. If it;s not the valve someone may have changed it, or the grommet, and a piece of the old hardened rubber grommet dropped inside. I wouldn't worry about it. What you must NEVER do is have them bead or sand blasted and not fully remove the baffling to clean out the blast media that will have got inside. Otherwise you can expect engine failure as it goes walk about.

I haven't removed the baffle an i definitely haven't dropped anything and got it stuck in there so yeah i think it will be fine. Thought it was better to be safe rather than sorry though, thanks.
