bayside_supra
Just curious as to what people think about blanking off your number plate when you post a pic of your car online. I never used to bother until someone on the Monaro forum worked out where I lived from a picture of my old car and told me I should always blank off my plate for safety. I never did work out why it was a good idea, but got into the habit of doing it, as everyone on that forum did. I see on here most people don't bother, some still do though, including me... why??? Al Massey
It used to be the norm, but in this day and age, I don't think it really matters anymore. People still get funny about showing a VIN plate, I have no idea why
gordy.r
I drive around all day with my plate on display, so I don't bother blanking it out on photos. Each to their own I suppose.
Sheefa
It's mainly because scumbags could take your photos and list your car on eBay etc. Not that it "should" matter but here's an example..... My first Supra I bought off ebay (stupidly without any research) but it all went to plan, I met the guy paid the cash and got the V5 log book etc. The car was officially mine. This was back in 2007. Fast forward 2 months and my Mum (living at home back then) calls me and says there's a guy who has come to collect the supra he's paid for. The car was on my parents drive as I caught the train into work. Obviously I was very confused. My mum informed him that I had only just bought it so was surprised I was selling so soon but to leave his details and I would be in touch immediately. He showed her a copy of the eBay listing etc and it was definitely my car with the vehicle registration displayed. The guy however knew at this point he had been a victim of financial theft and duped into thinking he had bought the car. The listing stated a £4k buy it now price for a black Auto TT and he enquired and paid the money via Western union!! Yes I know stupid but he was naive and obviously drawn in by the bargain. Then the email he used for payment "disappeared". So, how did he find out where the car was legally registwred to my house you may ask ? He went to the police station and explained the situation and they said they couldn't help him as it appeared the car was legally registered to a new owner........then they simply tilted the screen towards him so he could see my home address!!! Unbelievable. That said he was gutted as he knew I was rightful owner. An unusual example but part of the reason why it might help to cover the reg. bayside_supra
I've heard of stories like that happening before Greg. I suppose pics from for sale ads are more likely to be stolen than the pics on a forum.
