New BMW daily

lovely mate, I have the 535d saloon - absolute belter of a daily. Just finished tuning it and its incredible

Cheers :)

I've seen you comment on them recently as I think there are a few looking at them at the moment. Seems to be a popular choice on the forum. (We should start an owners thread, as this forum prob has better response times than most)

It's too early to say wether I'll get it remapped right away- it feels fast enough for a daily and if I want faster that's what I've got the supra for. I'd be more inclined to get it mapped for improved economy with a slight increase in hp. Bet I turn out to do the opposite.

How long have you had yours James? Any issues? Think I'll replace the charge air hose on mine as it's pretty dirty and I've read it's a weak point.

Just had a look at yours again. Very nice, I think the saloon looks better than the touring but I wanted an estate.

Hi mate no touch wood no issues yet

When i got mine i booked it in for the following;

Full service, remap, egr and dpf delete, new glow plugs.

Just to make sure all was well. Ran so much better after service and glow plugs

You're right they dont 'need' tuning but the remap helped mpg around 12-15%

That's a good increase

It goes into BMW in the morning for a checkup, so I'll be able to know if there is anything needing attention.

Just an update to say what happened at BMW!

I bought the car with an oil leak that I'd noticed, and after doing research I gambled that it was the seals on the intercooler hoses, that are known to perish. I managed to negotiate a sizeable amount off because of finding it, and took it to bmw thinking they could plug it in and tell me anything that was wrong, and also be able to give me the full picture on the oil leak, seeing as they would know it inside out.

Dealer said that it needed new rear H arms due to split bushings, and a new lower turbo due to the seals leaking.

Obviously I was gutted, £1600 for H arms and £2858 for the turbo replacement. I started thinking about where to get a new turbo and contacted eurocar parts, and thought about having it refurbed also.

To help me understand what I would be working with I started asking more detailed questions on the codition of the turbo internals, to which they couldn't andwer, so wheeled out the senior technician who worked on the car to answer my questions. Turbo seals have gone he says, what about impeller shaft play I ask? Yes there's a lot of play in the shaft he says and goes on to describe what happens when it explodes.

So I thank him for his time and take it to my normal friendly garage and I tell them BMW's findings with the agreement that they would do some stripping back and have a look at it and we would make a plan of attack from there.

I phoned the next day for an update and spoke to the mechanic doing the work. He tells me the turbo is fine!, it's not what's leaking, there is no play in the impeller shaft, and that he found it had excessive crank case pressure and that a filter was missing that was letting oil get into the charge air system, and the seals on the intercooler hose were letting oil escape.

He also said that nothing had been disturbed in a while, and that nobody had had anything off near the lower turbo to actually inspect it!

How bad is that? I complained to BMW who offered to inspect again as a good will gesture, to which I told them I didn't want.

To top it off my garage said the bushings on the rear H arms are fine also.

All in the repairs cost under what I had off the car, so I'm happy about that, but what a brass neck by BMW!

Nice car and awful update. BMW should be ashamed and it's awful to hear of such behaviour from a big company like BMW. At least you got it sorted.

How you finding the car other than your rigmarole above? I'm still on the look for a 525 or 530d m sport. I'm after a saloon but woukd be interested on how your finding it on a daily basis

A guy i know had a similar experience with the BMW dealer in Chester, £2000 to fix an oil leak from the sump area, various parts needed etc, paid £280 for the diagnosis too. He took it to another garage for a second opinion - £35 to replace a gasket, job done.

Thanks, it's a lovely car, really well put together. The interior and seats are really good, and you could sit for half an hour tuning in your seat with all the options.

Pick up is instant and you're at 60 before you know it. It sort of wafts along after the initial shove and just gains momentum rapidly for such a big car. Driving it about town and back rds it was showing about 27mpg. Resetting it and driving home on the motorway, when I got home it was showing 42mpg. I think if it's healthy it should be averaging about 40 with normal combined driving, but that's only on the lci as they improved the mpg on the facelift model.

The carbon black is more of a dark blue, but it looks nice.

It's got really good spec on it also, with very good heated seats, climate control, idrive with phone intigration and heads up display on the windscreenshowing speed, cruise control, sat nav and lane assist on it. Lane assist shakes the steering wheel if you change lanes without indicating and it also has front and rear parking sensors with proximity graphics on the widescreen display.

The brakes are really sensitive, and I'm finding it's taking a while to judge it without them biting too hard when coming to a stop. The front calipers are massive.

I think the main thing about it is refinement. I find I'm having to read the tach more to see where the engine is, as it's so quiet, whereas in the supra you can shift by sound alone if you wanted to. So in that respect it doesn't feel sporty, but very fast and planted.

Boot is huge also with lots of clever design, it's already done a few family day trips and it's a nice environment to travel in

I looked at 530d's etc FYI, but was given the tip that the 535 is more reliable and also the turbos are simpler in design rather than a variable vain design of the 530d? So an expensive specialised turbo should you need to replace.

Also heard the 520d has an issue with the timing chain. A few on this forum have the 535d and ultimately it affected my choice with lots of positive comments.

The BMW forum were not surprised at the experience put it that way!
