So what do you do when you come home from work and find this....

The builders were in next door having the chimney knocked out whilst the owners are away on holiday.

After 4 hours of cleaning, the place still looks a mess... Soot everywhere.. And i think i'm going to have to have the fireplace taken out and the chimney stack rebuilt.

Hope the builders got insurance

Mate,

get a quote from a proffessional cleaning service. Also, you'll need to get a structural engineer to check the integrity of your chimney (I presume they were adjoining?).

Contact the builders too - they should have public liability insurance. If they start acting like cocks, contact the HSE too.

Secondly, contact a good solicitor. You will be able to claim from the builders for the time spent cleaning up waste caused by them; as no agreement was in place with them you may be able to charge up to £250/hr or as much as the court deems reasonable.

Thanks chaps...

Basically, we took photo's and cleaned as much up as we could last night,

This morning the builder and surveyor (was drunk at time) came round at 7am. The builder was in shock at the mess.. and has told us he will sort everything out. He's had 2 lads cleaning up everythig and then he's booked some cleaners to come in this afternoon and tidy up again.

I've been next door and seen the work, and basically the chimneys twist.. So mine uses next doors stack and they use mine.

So basically he's taken all the upstairs out which came down my chimney.

I have the council coming round a bit, and another serveyour. Cleaners tonight, and carpet cleaners tommorrow.

The builder said he's going to have to rebuild the chimney again and put it back as is. The owners of the house can't be contacted.

Right...

Going to clean the supe now, ready for MOT in the morn...

Yep.. Lots of mess...

Even the kitchens covered in dust.

The builder seems ok.. He's told me its a case of either his insurance or the surveyours. But he said going by the fact that he has only done what the surveyour has recommended it should be him paying for the damages and not himself. But he said thats between him and the surveyour to sort out. He has let me take as many photos as i wanted. So he seems generally ok,.
