The ravens are back!

Not seen a pair round here for a few years, but yesterday I heard one, and today a pair followed me round the woods for an hour whilst walking the dogs.

They are a lot less timid than a crow and apparently you can get them as tame as a robin with patience. What with two families of buzzards who fly overhead most days and now some ravens the sky hold some big birds to admire. What's the difference between the common crow and the now quite uncommon wild raven?

The Raven is all black with a large strong bill and long wings. It's is the largest member of the Corvid family. It can be found alone or in pairs around the western parts of the UK inhabiting rocky habitats mostly along coastlines.

The Crow is all black live the raven but significantly smaller. Crows are also fairly solitary but can be found in pairs. Crows are found almost everywhere, from city centres to parks and gardens and in upland moorlands, woodlands et cetera.

You also have Hooded Crows, Rooks, Jackdaws, Magpies and Jays which are all part of the same family.

Reads like a scene from deliverance. I find it hard to tell the difference between crows, rooks, ravens and even jackdaws. I'm sure Bill Oddie would know.

Still, round here the Swallows and House Martins will be back soon, then you really know Summer is on the way.
