Hesitation when accelerating

Duncan

Recommended Posts

Seems to only happen every so often and mainly in 6th only. When I put my foot down in a high gear and the car comes on boost, it really feels like it's holding back. You do accelerate but it seems slower that it usually does. It did it in 2nd aswell, the other day, and it was much more apparent. The power seemed to be sporadic and come and then go and then come back. Randomly pulsed, kinda... Hard to explain but I hope you get the idea.

There is also this noise which has appeared at about the same time as this problem. Again, only happens in high gears when going relatively fast. Sounds like someone running their finger round the edge of a wine glass and seems to be coming from just behind the firewall in the engine bay. The pitch never changes with speed, revs or gears and seems to happen more when I let off. Don't know if the two things are related.

My initial thoughts on the first problem are incorrect sparkies. The car got serviced just before I took delivery of it and it has a halfords oil filter fitted. I'm just wondering if the same mechanic has decided that halfords plugs are worthy enough too!!!! Would this cause the first problem?

Really appreciate your help on this one as the car has barely been run in (15k miles) and I wasn't expecting anything like this to happen...

Spec's are in me sig. Cheers.

It's defo not the "death wine" as it does it off boost mostly. I recently had it checked out by Japvillage.com and they said it was mechanically sound. The guy really knew his stuff, the trouble was it behaved itself when he took it out!

I think the spark plugs may be worth checking.

Even though it's been serviced doesn't necessarily mean they have changed the plugs.

.....mmmmmm... but if it's bog standard then as long as they're

'standard' plugs should be OK ! (except 'DUFF' plug breakin' down

obviously).

Get some other owners to 'ave a butchers ? ?

and, as Martin says, a mechanic/garage.... THAT KNOWS SOOPS ! !

Hey that's interesting, I get a "wine-glass" noise as well, I've had it for a while but wasn't sure how to explain it, nice one Duncan! :)

Not sure whether its the same thing as yours, but mine seems to come from behind the dash on the passenger side, and is normally at tickover, then increases with the throttle until its drowned out by the engine/exhaust! :p Its not there all the time either....

I'm pretty sure my plugs need changing, but how would dodgy sparks make that kind of noise?

sounds like its missing, happend once on my old plugs did not know what it was, put your fut down to go and it was like hessitating. sounds a bit like rltc cutting in that noise.

changed plugs and it was ok

Just tested mine with new plugs gapped at 0.8mm (they were

gapped at1.1mm ! ie. standard gap).

The hesitation (which must have been misfiring ?) has now gone !

BUT, that's because I've de-catted mine !

Not so sure it's the same prob' with yours !?:(
