Mathew2068
I'm fairly certain I have an oil leak on the distributor, the heat shield has some oil on it. I have wiped it down so need to check just how bad it is when I get the car back from bumper repair. Just wondering if this is something I can do myself or I should leave to the professionals? Only thing I am worried about is the timing and marking it all up correctly. Would like to save money (and get my hands dirty) if I can but if it's a serious job then I'll get it done properly. Anyone done there's? Was it easy? 1993 NA MANUAL 92k miles.
stevie_b
marbleapple has done it recently. See post #28 onwards: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?338406-Marbleapple-s-Supra-pottering-thread-Winter-Tidy-Up/page2
Scooter
My advice is don't do anything else at the time (where Marbleapple went wrong initially). Remove all the leads/loom connectors from the dizzy, make your match marks, remove, don't rotate anything, clean, fit new ring and pop it back in. Start the car! The pics in the link will help if it doesn't start!
Mathew2068
Thanks for the info, when you put it like that it sounds really simple. I've never messed with timing or anything so it seems a little daunting :/ Where would be the best place to get the new o ring?
Mike2JZ
Timing lights are cheap. £20 or so. If you run a car with a distributor I'd say it's a must have tool. Far better to dial in the timing properly rather than relying on match marks. Takes 30seconds to setup the tool and see your timing, useful skill to learn
SupraLEDrears
I did it to two cars at the same time and then got confused with the dizzy's and had to get a mechanic out for both
AndyJax
I did my dizzy O ring last summer,I purchased the O ring from Mr T think it was £2.50 or there abouts. The key to replacing the dizzy in the correct position once you have replaced the worn O ring is to mark round the fixing bolt with something sharp before taking the dizzy out. I did this as per instructions I found on an American Lexus GS300 forum ( same engine as NA Supra) and all went well.
Mathew2068
Cheers for the info, how do I go about asking him though as I can't PM him :/ It's leaking quite a bit As are the cam covers, going to do the lot very soon!
stevie_b
If you pay your membership fee, then you'll be able to PM anyone. I can understand reluctance to pay for access to forums like this, but this one is an absolute mine of knowledge.
Mathew2068
No not at all, I don't mind paying. I just didn't realise that's why I couldn't PM haha I've just paid so it should go through today. Just keen to get the supra in good health as she looks a bit weepy :/
Scooter
Well done with signing up. If you need to do the cam covers at some point this thread might be handy to show how to remove the intake 'Y' section. You might consider changing the plugs, it's pretty much a 'once in an ownership' service item (60K miles) so may as well do once at the same time as the cam cover seals. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?4262-S-Plugs&highlight=plugs

Mathew2068
Do I need a new throttle body gasket when removing from the y pipe? cheers.
Mathew2068
Going to sort my rocker gaskets out asap, ordered the parts but I have been refunded as they weren't actually in stock Can someone point me in the direction of a definite fit rocker gasket set on either eBay or a reputable website please. I know what I need, I just don't know for sure as some don't state anything about vvti and such. Bladdy Supra mine field! Thanks for all the help so far guys, this really is a great help for new guys like me.

Scooter
Do I need a new throttle body gasket when removing from the y pipe? cheers. not really no, it's a metal gasket so just be careful with it and it'll be fine to reuse. Note the bolts under the Y branch are a pain, it's best if you have a 18" to 24" of extensions and go in from the exhaust manifold side. Mathew2068
Update on the Rocker situation Just had the rocker cover gaskets sorted yesterday at Mission Motorsport down in Gosport Fareham. Kenny down there is an absolute legend, from Japan and all over Japanese cars. More Honda but still loves the Supras. He was a head mechanic for a race team in Japan running an r34 skyline with 700hp so he knows his stuff. If anyone is even 30 miles away I would suggest taking your car there. Attention to detail was impressive and quality of work was great too. Took pictures of the work step by step...then washed my car! Never looked so fresh and so clean! Supra is now less weepy, have to see if the dizzy is still leaking after a few drives.
