Engine mileage from serial number

Hi my dad has bought a second hand engine for one of his cars and bought it as a low mileage excellent condition engine but seems to be more towards the end of its life... From the engine serial number is there a way of finding out the car it was originally in to see the mileage history of it?

It all depends if it was a Japanese import car then will be highly unlikely as most of them don't have engine numbers on there logbooks if its something like a Mercedes or Audi I'm sure there would be some history with the dealers of its past.

Nah its not an import its just a Vauxhall so hoping its traceable, thanks yeah calling the main dealer was todays option so will try that
