Posting for my son. He has just bought his first supra and the boot lid has rust marks which are to far gone .he has a replacement but could do with advice on how to go about it. If anyone has any videos ect to watch this would be a great help particularly in getting to the wiring . Thank you

Garage is worried that if they try take the glass out of the current one to repair the rust it will beak.

Try a different garage?

I had a little rust bubble on mine. Used Autodoc on here (I understand he's no where near you). The question of breaking the glass never even came up.

Buying a second hand one might not buy you much time at all.

If yours is salvageable get it done. New rear seal is £50-ish, plus paint/labour. Dread to think how much a new one would be if you found it. I'd prefer my freshly painted one over the other 2 options any day.

The garage that's been recommended to me is going to repair the rust bubble, and respray the whole lid. He's recommended a new seal (£80 from Keron) but just flagged that there is a real risk that the rust bubble will have put pressure on the glass and that there is a chance that if the pressure is removed then the glass could crack.

Getting quotes at the minute to repair this :-(

/QUOTE]

That does look one of the worst ones I have seen (tbh I would source a replacement as I bet its rusted through on the lip)

Just fitted a new boot lid on Sunday on my Black mkiv UK 6 Speed.

Bought a 2nd hand boot lid and had the glass removed to make sure all good under the seal (a customer did it as a favour) as long as they know what they are doing its straight forward!

Re-sprayed in and out in 202 black (the underside has been lacquered with satin lacquer to give a more oem finish)& new genuine seal off Keron.

Wiring straight forwards too.

We refitted the boot lid without the glass and wiper motor etc. (its lighter then) then bonded the glass back.

New oem badges too!

The hardest part was fitting the seal to the glass prior to fitting.

My only advise is completely strip the lid of everything as I hate over spray!

When I had mine taken out 2 years ago AutoGlass wouldn't cover breakage as they said they no longer carried or had access to Supra rear screens. Everything went fine though. There was a blue tailgate with glass for sale on eBay recently so they do come up for sale now and again. If I had as much rusting as the Red one pictured I'd be shopping for a spare/replacement.
