UK diff cooler how does it pump?

As per subject is the diff cooler oil on UK cars pumped electronically or mechanically around the cooler?

My mechanic says its electric and has some type of motion sensor too? If so it only pumps when the car is in motion?

Is there anyway of checking the operation and suppose if it's defective the only loss is to cooling which is not required anyway!

My cars diff is whining (see wanted post) and it's had a new diff cooler recently but presume this was damaged to to the old one leaking.

Thanks

It has an electric pump on the top of the diff and a temp sensor to trigger it

Thanks Lee so my mechanic mate is right!

Is there a way of checking if its operating correctly? As I said if it is in operational this is no detriment as the cooler is not needed am I correct?

Thanks

Mark

Go for an extended drive down the motorway at cruising speed ;) then pull off at a services and feel the cooler, if it's hot then it's working. If it's cold then something is broke as Lee said it only activates once the diff reaches the temperature trigger otherwise no oil is being passed through it.

Thanks for that I didn't think they would get that warm!

All I need is a crown wheel and pinion for my diff then I can test the cooler!

It'll get warm enough for you to know if it's working, the whole purpose of the cooler is to disperse heat, so if you can feel the heat radiating from it it is doing its job.

In 15 years I have never noticed either of my cars with a warm diff cooler but thinking about it now I have noticed it dries off when it was raining after stopping!

Thanks again.

It was designed for high speed cruising on the German autobahns so it probably doesn't really have much use over here unless you are doing track days or long distance motorway cruising.

It's also hidden behind the plastic guard Mark so wouldn't necessarily be easy to notice the heat radiating from it.

Found the info I was referring to above:

It just so happens that I was reading about the diff cooler system today! :read:

Manual says to connect terminals OP2 and E1 in the engine bay diagnostic connector, then check that there is pressure in the diff oil inlet hose from the pump.

You should get the 'diff oil' warning lamp flash on your dash too.

Hope that helps!
