el_bandido
I've been toying with the idea of doing some freelance Excel work to supplement the money I piss away on cars. Has anyone got any insight into getting into this kind of thing? So far it's all been word of mouth for friends of friends.
Tsia
I've been thinking about doing the same thing as well for a while - although more so teaching people how to use it effectively. My main concern with the latter part is people needing said training during 9-5, Monday to Friday... when I'm already in a desk job! I already do a few bits here and there (again from word of mouth) but so far it hasn't really been worth the time. Mostly doing it because I'm weird and enjoy doing complicated requests in Excel. el_bandido
That's exactly where I'm at, I've become the company excel guru and the amount of man hours I've saved with macros has got me thinking I could definitely be charging for my time. I hadn't realised how little the average excel user knows.
Tsia
Exact same situation here - as well as the fact you can do genuinely top notch reports in it, especially useful when all the company will provide is Excel rather than any 'advanced' reporting systems. jamesmark
The other thing that can impact this is, the amount of free stuff you get out there. Very detailed youtube clips that teach you from start to finish, there is a mass of forums too. It becomes quite an easy thing to use/learn (Excel) if you give it some time and minimal effort. Just done a google search on Excel Trainer for arguments sake and first few links had nothing.
el_bandido
That's exactly how I learned; just googling the specifics of what I needed to do. The biggest hurdle is actually understanding what Excel is capable of. Some people in the office almost had a heart attack when I demonstrated a basic pivot table. Wait until you show them slicers It's all well and good having youtube videos there, hell, there are tutorials for everything - people usually just can't be bothered or don't have the time to sit and watch videos. I know that I don't learn much from watching someone else do it, and prefer to have bit of an interactive environment to learn in.
