Buying a car with no MOT - How to go about payment

Hoping to go up to Sheffield to buy a car but just a quick question, I'm planning on trailering/transporting it back so that's fine however about payment I'm not too sure, I'm hoping to get a self-drive truck so I can collect it myself & pay directly but if this isn't possible, what would you suggest is the safest way to pay?

If I were to hire a transporter company to do it can I trust them to let me know the car's safely on the truck, and then make the payment by BAX and they handle the V5 document?

I'm going up to view the car before confirming the puirchase or should i make a deposit & then fill out the v5?

The one time I've done this I transferred the money to the transport company and they paid the guy cash on collection for me, but suspect not all will do that. Also some trust even then but I figured a company was more safe and that way at least it ensured the usual car/payment occurred at the same time which is fine with the seller.

For me a lot would depend on my view on the seller after meeting up, and how much money is at risk in the worst case scenario. Most people are like us and if you paid in full in advance they aren't likely to disappear before the buyer turns up, but better to be cautious.

I know a guy who may be able to do this for you.

He served in the army with me and I trust him with my life.

And Sheffield is round the corner from me so I can go meet up and make sure the deal is done and the car on the trailer if you'd like?

that's very kind of you, thanks

Sadly the guy sold the car to someone who came to see before me - I was hoping to have first refusal as i had been speaking to him before he put it up for sale. I was even prepared to offer him £1k more than what he set as his asking price in the ad. Oh well!

So you wasted a journey all the way up here?
