Dim Sum
Just wondering if people experience using rivet nut on bodywork. I am planning to to use rivet nut to fit on a lip to the bumper, the reason for this is if the lip gets damaged and etc it could be taken off for repair. How good are they at holding and also would the hole from the rivetnut get bigger over time? These are what I am planning to use.
pedrosixfour
Ordinary nut and bolt and body washers will save you a lot of grief. Rivets aren't meant for use in much apart from sheet steel. They won't bind in the fibreglass like they're supposed to once compressed meaning, if you do need to remove the lip, the rivnut will just turn along with the bolt. Pure hardship that is easily avoidable.
Dave_Batch
Yep, i just used bolts with flat washers and nylock nuts
Dim Sum
Okay thanks, so I am better off just nut and bolt. Appreciate the advice
Nic
I've used rivnuts but that was into sheet steel to replace captive nuts that needed to be drilled out. They wouldn't work in a bumper, i think they'd pull loose and possibly crack the fibreglass, nuts bolts and penny washers to spread the load would be a better way to secure the lip. Digsy
If you wanted a more "OEM" solution you could fibreglass a Bighead nut onto the bumper: https://www.bighead.co.uk/the-original-bighead/#our_range
