heater blowing only warm not hot

If it had overheated then it could of damaged the head gasket but then for it to affect the cooling system i'd expect

it to be losing coolant either into an oil gallery, a cylinder or too the outside of the block

But if its not losing coolant that kind of rules that out

Have just this minute checked and all coolant is still there.

I do appreciate you taking this time and trouble and yes, it does sound reasonable to expect coolant loss which isn't happening.

This matrix problem was April 2015 and the heater was working fine last winter, not something you notice until it actually stops of course, but would it have taken this long to show up ?

My immediate concern is a long drive ahead for New Year and I'd hate for it to break down 1/2 way up the M1

Mine does this every 8 months due to previous owner putting radseal in it. Even though heads been replaced for a different issue and the whole engine has been chemically washed and rebuilt, the issue still remains. It needs to be flushed with a hosepipe to sort it out.

Hello Harry, thanks, it seems the more I ask the more reasons appear :o) Could you explain exactly what needs flushing with a hosepipe, not the whole cooling system ?

Ignore the t i used. you can just stick the hosepipe straight in. Do it to both sides for 30 mins at a time and to a cold engine please. I've also disconnected the hose from the tap and squirted fairy liquid in every 2 mins for 10 mins. The foam brings all the crap out.

Many thanks Harry and for the link.

This doesn't sound like a 'head' problem to you then ?

The matrix is only 18 months old, would it really get clogged up this quickly and I see references to distilled water, is that necessary ?

I would try this first as it's the cheapest option and I like to stick to distilled water as it's easy on the aluminium parts.
