marbleapple
Yep, take it out of the car and send it to Hide 'N' Seat and ask them to recover it Thanks for the suggestion. Never heard of them before but will certainly look into it. I assume I have to send the whole handbreak rather than just the leather 'bit'? I am also in the process of replacing the gear stick handle with a new one. I've been slightly thrown by the fact that the old one has wires going into it whilst the new one doesn't! How do you disconnect the wires from the buttons? And spell its name right, or it might just get stroppy and break your hand Lol. A fair point well made sir!! Buy a new one from Toyota Your thread has already cost me enough! Edited March 10, 2017 by marbleapple (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
I can't remember how the wires disconnect, but I do remember they are a PITA to do. If I remember I'll post here, but someone else is bound to know. It's not that I am incompetent (honestly...), but I do work on lots of other stuff and need hands on for it to come back to me sometimes, especially trim stuff
marbleapple
It's not that I am incompetent (honestly...), ) Definition of irony: Chris Wilson explaining that he isn't incompetent to a man who thought handbrake was spelt handbreak. but I do work on lots of other stuff and need hands on for it to come back to me sometimes, especially trim stuff ; ) Move closer to Leeds please and you'll have a regular customer! Rob W
Those 2 wires go down to a connector near where the auto surround dash panel meets the stereo dash panel. IIRC the plastic piece that goes round the O/D and shifter buttons clips off, then pull the the wires out. Then feed cables through the new auto shifter and re-clip back the buttons. Be real careful with the wire tho where they attach to the back of the O/D button, I snapped the spade like connector and had to buy a new wire loom from Toyota. rider
Looks like you have a fair bit of surface rust on the shock tower. I'd get that sanded fast and black matt painted before it develops to anything pitted. That's a real simple job that will make a massive difference to the look of your engine bay. If these are corroded you probably should take a look at the underside of your brake booster. They can tend to get surface rusting as well which as well as being unsightly its a fairly expensive part to replace.
marbleapple
Another small update The below part in the engine bay was really annoying me as most things are black it is was a dull silver. I decided to paint it black. I'm quite happy with the result. I also replaced a couple of old bolts with new bolts. The engine bay is starting to look a lot cleaner now. I'm also going to do as Rider suggests and paint the shock towers in due course. Thanks to Rider I now have the rear windscreen rubber so hopefully the car is going into the bodyshop on Tuesday. Its then going to the detailer ready for Japfest. My new plates arrived yesterday so I might try fit them tomorrow if I have time. Time to tinker is limited due to me having a 14 month old who would prefer me to play with him and his toy cars rather than the real car in the garage! I've chickened out changing the gear knob for the time being. I don't like playing with electrics. Rob's advice above was kindly received but I'm not confident enough to try switch them over without more info. I'm just asking for trouble. marbleapple
New plates fitted. Car goes into the bodyshop this week for the boot and bonnet to be sorted ahead of the detailed I have booked. I can't decide whether the car needs facelift lights?

marbleapple
See you didn't get those shock towers treated and painted yet! It's on the list of jobs I promise! Just need to buy one of the anti rust coating chemical you suggested.
marbleapple
Small update. Car is back from bodyshop. They have done a great job with the rust that was bubbling on the boot lid. I only have an after shot sadly! I have also followed Rider's instructions and treated the shock towers. A vast improvement as he promised! - It was even easier than I expected. Sanded, treated, left for a few hours to dry and then painted. I've been having a look at the plastic seal that connects to the car above the car door. I can't work out whether they jut out too much or are meant to be like this as a water soak away. I'm a little suspicious that they might not be connected correctly because I don't remember the same in my last two cars. Opinions guys? - Apologies for the quality of photos. Its hard to get the iPhone to focus. The car goes for its detail and paint correction next Friday (this was delayed due to issues at the detailers end). Should be looking all pretty by Japfest. marbleapple
The window/water rails are correct, it's normal. car looks great too you must be chuffed Cheers Ric I am pleased. She gets so little use it's almost a crime but I am proud to own her. I regret not getting a TT as I miss the power my old UK spec had (Guigsy's old blue BPU) but I do really like the colour. Thanks for the comment re the water holes.
