binfieldx Posted November 21, 2016 Share Posted November 21, 2016 I was driving the supra ("spirited driving") and stopped as I noticed the oil lamp flashed on. When I got out to check there was oil pouring out the front bumper. I opened the hood and to my shock there was oil absolutely everywhere. Had no idea what had happened but luckily my mechanic friend was with me and noticed the oil filter seal had blown out and my oil basically squirted everywhere. The seal wasn't broken it had just blown out and dumped 90% of oil around the bay (literally everywhere) We took the filter off and refitted it with the seal seated correctly again. I had to run to tescos to get some oil just to refill it and limp it home. I was only approx 1mile from home. Anyway after refitting the filter and filling back up the engine didn't appear to be leaking any further oil. The seal wasn't leaking any oil either. I think I possibly had a lucky escape as the engine wasn't making any unsual sounds, no clonking or ticking or anything. Anyway the car is home now but my next question is what can I check before I turn it back over. Ideally I need to turn it over so I can get the car out to the road to get it on a flatbed to go for a further inspection. Should I just buy a new oil filter and re-fill it up with proper oil? If it were me, I'd like to see exactly what pressure the engine is creating at idle and at 3000/4000 rpm when cold vs warm just as a sanity check. I suppose what i'll first do is replace all the oil and a new toyota branded filter then clean up the bay as best I can and see how its running. It was the result of the o-ring of the previous filter staying behind and not being noticed and the Two o-rings being clamped together which caused a weak seal.
