DShox Posted September 20, 2005 Share Posted September 20, 2005 evening all, I need help! Just wondering if anyone else has experienced suspension thud. My Teins are lower on the front than the back and yet the noise is emerging from the rears when I go over bumps. I guess I need to raise the suspension with a C-Spanner? Anyone know what size and where I can get one??? Just wondering if anyone else had this problem. I've had it thudding since I imported it so wanna get it sorted now. When shocks are broken, they are broken, there's no way around that. Just replace them with new ones. The standard yellow Bilsteins are about as good as you can get without shelling out for a custom 'Chris Wilson' type set-up. They're only around £400 for a set of 4. It sounds like the wheel is actually shaking a tiny amount when I'm driving, but when jacked up it's rock solid. There's also a wind-type noise coming from the wheel which I have no idea what it is. DShox Posted September 21, 2005 Author Share Posted September 21, 2005 not the wheel bearing is it. when i jacked up the rears, I noticed that when i got the wheel nuts as tight as possible, I could rock one wheel back and forth yet the other side was holding steady. have you tried doing up the thread nut tighter or considered it might be a bearing? failing that - possible replacement drop links? I guessed and changed the drop links but that didnt work. then I tried the thread nut but that was tight, then thought it might be the bearings but Toyota checked it out and send my suspension springs werent being given enough room to flex...now I'm in limbo! Paul -C- Posted September 22, 2005 Share Posted September 22, 2005 DShox, the wheel doesn't move at all when the car is jacked up, so I don't think it's the wheel bearing. I've also replaced the drop links and anti-roll bar bushes, so it's not them. If you can move one of your wheels when the car is in the air then it sounds like a wheel bearing problem. VIL Posted September 22, 2005 Share Posted September 22, 2005 I had a thud/bump sound also. Go over a hole or speed bump and clunk there it was. At the time I had a HKS SuperDragger fitted that was beaten to **** due to grounding out on speed bumps etc. Under the car it was bent up and only 1/4" off the rear arm of the car. Got the Dragger changed and hey presto no more bump sounds! So I guess it was hitting the rear arm when jolted. Check you exhaust is clearing your rear arms, especially if its aftermarket! DShox Posted September 22, 2005 Author Share Posted September 22, 2005 yup but according to Toyota it is not the wheel bearing or nut because I asked them specifically to assess the noise. They took everything apart and put it back together again. They say it is the suspension bottoming out. I spoke to Tein this morning. They have asked me to take 1 wheel off the front and rear (shocks are different) and phone them back with: 1. the stamp/reference on the dampers (to determine the type) 2. the stamp/reference on the springs (to determine the type) Apparently many in Japan didnt follow manufacturer instructions and mixed and matched inappropriate dampers with springs - hopefully it is a case of just replacing the current springs with the correct ones. Find a local Tein dealer (or whatever you have on) who can do the fitting for you and help with the assessment. The dealer will then deal with Tein (or whoever on your behalf). I took the Soop to a place with a pit who welded the flapping heat shield on firmly and sent me on my way - didnt solve it. VIL Posted September 22, 2005 Share Posted September 22, 2005 The `Dragger` when you tried to physically move it seemed solid enough. But you have to think of the travelling forces involved, you hit a pot hole or speed bump at 20/30 + MPH and the exhaust is going to move on its hangers. If the clearance between it and the rear arm is narrow then the likelyhood is they will contact. I`m certainly not suggesting this is the answer to your problem but might be worth investigating further. Noisy/thumping rear ends seem to be common place amongst Supra owners for a variety of reasons so its worth exploring all avenues. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
