Harleys new progress blog from the start. My Na 5

Today the car went on the dyno to get the engine run in.. not sure if the run in period is complete but so far so good! No major issues.

Just a few small things..

slightly leaky power steering line which was presumably a quick tighten up fix.

Blocked heater matrix - which i kind of knew about as the heaters have never been great.

And then lastly (which i will take full credit for 😅) a damaged fan due to the fitment of the power steering cooler - i mounted it directly to the radiator using some studs that i pushed through the core as I'd seen done online.. i just didn't check that the fan wouldn't then hit the studs 🤦 so when the engine was running and the fans came on, one of them smacked the studs from the cooler and destroyed itself. My bad. I mean in hindsight it wasn't the best of ideas! I'll probably buy a new radiator and re do all of it in the future. But in the meantime i just need a new fan to get it functioning again.

Screenshot_20230606_210047_Gallery.jpg.46976fff033f5e0832c47f28ce07b109.jpg

so currently it just has the one fan running at full chat!

Received this video from Mike of it idling. Love the sound of high lift cams. It has whifbitz 269s installed

During its run in time today the guys were kind enough to loan me some spare rear wheels and tyres to save the Mickey Thompsons from being burnt out on the dyno 🫡😀

While the supra has been at SRD I've been paying some attention to a pair of oem leather front seats i bought a few months ago. They came from a low mileage TT6 and underneath all the dirt they'd picked up from seemingly spending years in storage they were in really good condition. Only problem with them is that while in storage other things had been placed on top of them resulting in indentations all over.

I left them in my garage hoping the indentations would come out over time - but after 6 months they still looked the same. Google said to use a steamer but that did very little.. so i went all out and soaked them with water before then ironing them! I figured if i ruined them I'd just buy new covers but its actually made vast improvement 😁 you can still see the where the indentations were but no where near as bad. The worst one was on thr drivers seat below the headrest. Hopefully with a bit more time and usage it'll improve a bit more.

(Excuse the flooring - currently having our downstairs renovated!)

I'll be fitting them as soon as the car is back. The Recaro's in the car currently are alright but i think these will be nicer

Yesterday was the big day! Mapping!

I didn't realise it was being done until Mike sent me the dyno graph.. 666whp! Absolutely crazy. I thought I'd be lucky to make 650bhp let alone whp

Mike said the car performed faultlessly on the dyno which was nice to hear.

It sounds incredible.. and honestly that was half the reason i built it. I was never really chasing figures or trying to build the fastest supra.. i just wanted it to be pretty fast and make all the right noises - and im pretty sure I've achieved that 😆 just cant wait to pick it up and drive it now!!

So i picked the Supra up on Thursday and have had the most amount of fun in it!

Honestly its better than i thought it was going to be - and i knew it would be awesome.

On the way home from SRD a 2.5 hour drive turned into a 5 hour drive with the help of huge tail backs on the M25 😩 also the 27°c weather wasn't helping oil temps.

I need to get a laptop so Mike can check the ecu log because i was hitting a boost cut occasionally - i think this was down to oil temperature because since Thursday I've only really driven it in the evenings when the air temperature is much cooler, and subsequently cooler engine temps and i haven't had an issue.

In the meantime im going to buy an oil cooler, its something i just over looked when building everything else but definitely worth while.

SRD have really done a fantastic job of setting everything up perfectly. Not just engine wise but also how the car handles - something i was a bit nervous about was how the car would feel..

In the years that I'd had it on the road previously i never thought it felt that great, it wasn't confidence inspiring and felt a bit unstable. I was also questioning whether I'd made the right decision by going with the harder grade polyurethane bushes and on top of all of that I've been worried that the drag radials would make it feel even worse!

In fact the handling of the car has probably been one of my biggest fears...

Ash at SRD spent 7 hours setting up the geo and wheel alignment and working out correct tyre pressures and it shows! It drives perfectly! Its firm but not too harsh, the back end squats as you come on boost and you just feel the car dig in and take off. It also feels agile though, and i really cant even tell that its on radials as its not bouncy or wallowy at all. Huge credit to Ash for that - its very impressive!

The grip the car has is phenomenal, im easing it into gears and being particularly mindful in first due to the R154 which im fully aware is well past its usual limitations! But 2nd gear hooks the whole way to the limiter which feels incredible.

Started doing a couple of small bits of tidying up this evening.

Flatting and polished the near side wing - still need to do the whole near side but started on the wing.

20230617_173152.thumb.jpg.f63067d69e860f5114f296f705280808.jpg

also got the centres and edges of the front discs rubbed down and painted as they had started to rust as they were bare metal. These Brembos are very good! The more confident im getting with the car the more im getting on the brakes 😆

Mike and Ash at SRD did mention that it was difficult to get from 2nd into 3rd quickly at high rpm and at first i didn't understand what they ment because i wasn't experiencing it... but that was because i wasn't pushing the car hard enough and was short shifting at 5k rpm. Now I've got slightly more confident with the car and am taking it right round to red line i see what they mean - i might remove the short shifter and see if that helps as its very frustrating hitting the limiter in 2nd then trying to get it into 3rd only to find it refusing to go and having to double clutch before it'll go in

Went to fit my oem leather front seats today. My car never had electric adjustable seats and so i knew I'd have to make a small loom. I removed the Recaro's, cleaned up the carpet and gave it another good coat of dye. I also needed to adjust the carpet position because it wasn't sitting correctly along the edges.

i cut the plug off the bottom of the drivers seat because i didn't have the other side of it.. i then made my own plugs

then got it into the car only to discover the worm gear that moves the seat backwards and forwards with completely shredded! 🤦

So the Recaro's will be going back in again tomorrow while i fix the oem drivers seat! Nightmare..

Also if anyone is contemplating dying their carpet then this is the stuff to use..

On Saturday i took the Supra into work to put it on the ramp and give it a good check over and double check everything was still tight as I've now done probably 300 or so miles since collecting it from SRD - its been driving perfectly but figured I'd just do a bolt check for piece of mind since I've been doing a fair few hard pulls in it (thoroughly enjoying myself)

As expected everything was as it should be and i marked everything as i went along - although i did notice the nsr tyre has been rubbing against the handbrake cable and so i made a small adjustment there by pulling the cable back towards the centre of the car before it got any worse.

While going through all the various nuts and bolts i noticed a single drop of oil on the sump plug.. figured it just needed a little nip up and all would be good 😬

Put my ratchet against it and initially it did appear to tighten for like a quarter of a turn but then it went loose... 😩 fcuk!

It was a cheap china alloy sump plug so i darted to the nearest parts store to buy a replacement while simultaneously praying it was just the plug that had stripped.. not the sump!

Fortunately that was the case and this time i bought a quality steel sump plug - never buying an ebay one again! I also allowed all the oil to drain and replenished with Castrol edge 10w 60. Millers would have been my preferred choice as recommended by Lee but my options were limited at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon and i didn't fancy putting the original oil back in incase there were any pieces of stripped thread in it.

Few small updates with the Supra, since 'mostly' finishing it last year (they're never finished)

I thoroughly enjoyed driving it during the summer and attended a couple of shows in it.. most noticeable being Japanese Performance show where it won best Toyota

I have a few plans for it this year. First of all i need to do something with the R154. Its not done badly considering its been holding 666whp on drag radials but realistically its only a matter of time before it throws the towel in and it would be annoying if it did suddenly chew 3rd gear up (as they are known for on high HP cars) as in good working order R154s hold a decent bit of value. So better to sell it now before it ultimately ends up being worth scrap.

Screenshot_20240212_223114_Messenger.thumb.jpg.312c9e9f0b519b9f23cda732ee0b691f.jpg

R154 and propshaft removed.. and later i also removed the A02B and shafts.. all sold.

20240203_184503.thumb.jpg.c92882e944b8406702db5f1baae28fa9.jpg

before actually letting the R154 go i took it to a local transmission shop for a strip down and inspection.. didn't want to sell it to another member if it was damaged and it had been whining a bit.. not to mention the metallic oil i drained from it!

After a strip down it became clear what the issue with it was.. the MC billet shift fork had been rubbing against the gear set 😩

IMG-20240212-WA0192.thumb.jpg.a1dd191745d46a15ab5b2f88f0b1ebed.jpg

so now i have to figure out the best solution for this. Fortunately however the rest of the internals are fine!

All being well, i should have a V160, B03B, prop and shafts in 3 weeks! Definitely cheaper options out there, and i did strongly consider a GS6 or 420g bmw box but its just not the same as a proper V160 is it and this is a car for life for me.

Ouch! That really did do a great job of destroying the gears!

Also, a spec 3+ clutch, spec solid flywheel, V160 oil and a new under bonnet insulation all ordered from Whifbitz. Thanks again to Paul for sorting me out with a really good price on these parts 🤝🏻

Picked the R154 up this morning after having it repaired and rebuilt again, thats now sold a long with the A02B, prop and shafts. Nice selection of drive train parts i currently have sitting in my garage though!

I got the new shifter installed on the V160 and gave it all a bit of a clean, I'll take it into work tomorrow and clean it more thoroughly. I have some aluminium acid cleaner which i think will almost bring it up like new.

Took the v160 into work today and gave it a good clean with a wire brush and some aluminium acid cleaner.. didn't quite come up like new but certainly much better now 30 years worth of road grime and grease has been removed.

My SRD single piece prop and Oem slave cylinder arrived today too.

Took my Diff into work today to give it a good clean up. Wire wheeled and acid washed the rear cover and painted the main casing.

Also drained the oil out of it as both the diff and the gearbox still have oil in them as they were never drained before shipping. Pretty glad about that tbh as it meant i could see the condition of the oil which was nice and clear with no unwanted debris.

Finally got my oem spoiler painted today, one of my guys at work owed me a favour so i said he could paint the spoiler for me as payment.. 3 months of pestering him to do it and he finally did it today. I waited around for it to dry this evening only to discover the paint had reacted and blistered a long the bottom. Not pleased.. so i think I'll likely just do it myself now. Tbh i dont really know why I've waited so long for him to do. Should have just done it myself weeks ago.

whilst i was waiting for the spoiler to be painted and then dry, i polished up my HKS Ti exhaust which came up nicely, i then tried my hand at colouring the tip which turned out pretty good. Took me a couple of attempts, each time you have to polish off the colour before starting again.

The very back of the back box doesn't look very good so I'll get rid of that tomorrow, But im pleased with the tip!

Not to everyones taste im sure, but i have big titanium plans for my engine bay!
