Been pretty slow progress lately. Was hoping the car would be pretty much painted by now but with work being so busy and having a few members of staff off sick its ment the supra has just been collecting dust in the corner.

I did spend a few hours on it this afternoon though, got the exhaust heat shields blasted and painted and also painted one of the wings. 20210904_152959.thumb.jpg.ac3d4b4118058a2f941f4d3b49a1072f.jpg

To anyone looking at getting their car resprayed, i highly recommend specifying Spectral lacquer. It is more money but its 100% worth it.

Waiting for my shields to come back from blast and hi temp coating too.  Those look really good! What’s spectral lacquer? How’s it different ?

What kind of paint have you used on the heat shields? Is it the same grade as calliper paint or do the shields get hotter?

Its just regular solvent based paint with a 2k lacquer. Honestly the heat shields are never going to get that hot. The only one that might be affected is the one on the firewall near the downpipe but even then I'd be surprised if the heat actually caused the paint to flake.

High temperature paint is for components that might exceed like 150°C for prolonged amounts of time. People paint their cam covers in regular 2k paints and i can guarantee they get hotter than the heat shields will

Good to know 👍 I thought they'd get quite hot on a run!

Got my bonnet mostly finished yesterday. Its a long process painting everything the way we're doing it but it'll be worth it.

Basically we're lacquering everything twice. So we apply the base coat, allow that to dry before applying 2 good coats of lacquer. Then let that completely cure over night before flatting it all back down with 1500 wet and then applying another 2 coats of lacquer. Its means once its all dry there's 4 layers of lacquer to work with when it comes to flatting and polishing so every little blemish (silicone, spot of dirt etc) can be completely flatted out before its final polish giving a flawless finish. Long winded mind you!

Still a bit more polishing left to do but its going to look incredible.

i also got my SRD under trays re fitted and took the door down to bare metal to get rid of one or two tiny spots of rust that started to creep through. (Dont mind the dark spots, they're not dents, just left over bits of black paint - the photo makes it look like its dented to hell but fortunately its perfectly straight)

Thought I'd updated this but clearly not..

So the car is now primed at long last. Buzzed over the whole thing again with 320 and then got two good coats of Spectral Epoxy primer on. Then the following day gave it another 2 good coats of high build. The shell is now ready to be blocked down. We're having a brand new booth installed next month with underfloor extraction so we've been waiting for that before painting it.

In the mean time I've used raptor on the panel behind the rear bumper and blasted and painted the rear crash bar

The paint finish is absolutely phenomenal. Im so pleased with it. My colleague Ash did such a good job, i really started to doubt whether the car would ever look properly straight again. I work in this industry which can often be a curse when looking at your own car with a trained eye. I thought for sure that there would be a high likelihood of having a few ripples somewhere given the amount of work that had been done fabricating a new quarter panel and sills and taking the whole thing back to bare metal. But i must have underestimated my team - Ash who painted the car has done a flawless finished. Not a single ripple, silicone or run! Its like glass!

Now just to fit all the new seals and trims..

I got a bit experimental with my interior trims..

Like i would assume many people now, my interior plastics were looking a bit tired in places, just your typical scuffs and scratches etc, i had used the aqua blaster on similar plastics before to remove scratches but was obviously pretty hesitant to put my whole supra interior through it!

I tested it on a single rear quarter glass plastic first as I'd seen a few of these for sale incase i ruined it!

Massive improvement in terms of scratches! It does however dull the surface of its colour (however after 29 years of silicon based cleaners/plastic dressings it does make me wonder what the original colour would have been! Perhaps I've just taken it back to the factory finish?)

i left it overnight covered in trim restorer anyway to put some of the oils back into it.
