mugen_power Posted October 31, 2016 Share Posted October 31, 2016 Hey guys, Just looking for a bit of advice, basically I've been restoring the underside of my car, complete sub frames off job. I wasn't aware of the perils of underseal until I did a bit of research to them find out apparently it's not a good idea or at the very least without the strictest of prep work before hand. So I'm currently at the point where my front subframe is back on and I had already undersealed my wheel arches but not much more than that, the rear is still off and I've been underneath for a few days wire brushing it all. Now the concern I have is the weather, it's getting pretty cold and a lot of moisture in the air and I'm doing this in a barn so I can't be sure I can fully dry the underside now and as I understand it's a big no no to do it in the winter. So how to I proceed from here? I've done some pretty extensive wire brush work underneath so I feel I need to cover it at least through winter. Shall I leave the underseal in the front arches or remove it? And just to get it through winter with a bit of protection shall I just maybe hammerite paint it and then take it to Jurgen to do a proper underseal job after winter? rider Posted October 31, 2016 Share Posted October 31, 2016 (edited) Underseal is a nightmare for hiding what isn't best kept hidden. All my cars have underseal on them and as it is coming away I'm treating the surface that has become exposed and then zinc priming, painting (I use matt black spray cans for the underside on all my cars) and finally surface coating. That way, if rust comes back it'll at least be visible. A really excellent (smooth finish) top coat that is really durable (its commonly used on steel stairs so withstands serious footfall) is a Manor coatings product. Great for your wrought iron railings and also your metalwork under the car. https://www.bitec.co.uk/manor-5lt-high-build-garage-industrial-vinyl-semi-matt-black-paint-5-litre.html It doesn't clean off brushes so its a one brush per application kind of coating.
