Pinging sound?

Hi fellas,

Finally bought a Supra and on the test drive I didn't notice anything unusual, maybe I was a bit too nervous to hoon it, however on the way home quickly realised putting my foot deep into the accelerator produces an uncomfortable rattling sound. It's got a metallic twang to it and kinda sounds like a go-kart engine is strapped under the bonnet. Worth noting there's no obvious loss to performance (not that I'd know anyway).

It's not RPM dependent as if I verrrry gradually build up the revs it doesn't come on, however putting the accelerator down an inch or so quite rapidly brings it on.

From the reading so far it's apparently injectors (although can't rule out more.... uncomfortable problems). Inclined to think it's not a bearing as it doesn't do it when not accelerating.

Guess the questions are does this sound like injectors, and what am I looking at to get this fixed?

I'm borderline blithering-idiot mechanically (at the moment at least) and have no daylight hours in the week.

Reckon I could drop it at the local garage or does this require somewhere more specialist?

Thanks!

Edit: It's '95 NA-5 Saw online somebody said carbon buildup? The car has covered 200 miles in the last year so maybe it has something to do with that?

It's unlikely to be a gearbox problem - they're usually dependent on road and engine speed, not whether you're accelerating or not.

A rattling sound (like ball bearings in a tin can) whilst accelerating can sometimes mean the engine is pinking. It's an unusual fault for a supra, but I guess it's possible to do in the hands of a bad mechanic.

Take it to a garage, its almost impossible to accurately diagnose from your

description, or get a local member to have a listen to it if one is near you

Can't see how it would be carbon build up if its only done 200 miles in the last year

and does that give you pinging sounds, my car had 137,000 miles on it and no noises like that

Did you source/did the guy tell you where the exhaust leak is/was? It could just be that at low exhaust flow speed the gases flow the way they are meant to, when at higher speeds the gas is leaking from a joint/hole creating the noise.

If you have a garage you know trust, or friends etc then sure pop it to them, if you don't and are using x y z garage for it then i'd do as much research and elimination of issues before you go to them. Injector problems on NA's are almost unheard of, you made it back to Somerset from kent and it recently passed an emissions MOT. Sounds like it's running/idling ok and so I'd be looking for rattles, loose exhaust shields the exhaust itself to start with.

Take some pics, does it have both cats in place?

Sounds like the pinging sound maybe coming from your wallet?

My wallet is definitely pinging. And will probably be pinging for the foreseeable future.

Have you had a poke around to see if anything is loose?? it could just be summit hitting a belt..... but it does sound like a bearing from the wheel area ! Is it from the front or back???

/QUOTE]

Not that easy as it doesn't do it when idling, I live in a very residential area so will have to take it out to the sticks to rev it, and don't really know anybody within a 100m radius of where I'm living to rev it for me.

Am I right in thinking if it was injectors you would be getting a sort of missfire feel to it ????

I don't know what a missfire feels like, the power delivery is dead smooth, the noise just gets progressively louder, assume if it was this maybe delivery wouldn't be?

Yes, between the headers and the first cat, I can't see or hear anything though. I'm a bit of a spaz, and wouldn't know where to begin diagnosing an exhaust rattling noise. Sadly don't know anybody in Bath. Hard to source because I can only hear it when driving.

Will take some pics in an hour or so.

My guess is its this one the OP posted up in a previous thread and its only done

200 miles from the previous years mot

It is indeed. Still can't regret it yet as I knew it would have something wrong but I paid half of what I originally budgeted so I'm not that worried about indulging it a bit. Plus condition wise outside of this rattle it's genuinely immaculate and the paperwork shows the miles are legit until at least 2006. Although if it's the big ends or something I'll be eating these words.... (which it shouldn't be as it idles fine).

Need to find a local mechanic that seems trustworthy, assume I should avoid big chains.

How do you expect folks to help when you haven't even told us what engine it has?

Sorry, I edited my initial post after seeing your comment. It's a 95 NA-5.

Could just easily be the knackered exhaust rattling, as that's what it failed on the last MOT. On a side, glad you got sorted at last! Hope you enjoy after initial issues.

Thanks, me too!

I hope so, just seems strange it does it so in sync with the engine, yet isn't RPM dependent (if that makes sense).

Alright lads the jury's in.

Crack in the exhaust just under the first cat. Getting a full exhaust system (with no cats) fitted from Longlife. Should have the problem fixed and other than that the car is apparently in great condition!

All your neighbours will hate you and your ears will bleed or you'll go insane from the unrelenting drone of the exhaust at any speed. Listen to one first and see if you can live with it !
