HKS Cam Gears Yes or No?

I will never understand why people will try and skimp on something that can cause thousands of £ worth of damage if it fails. :conf:

I've seen a cam gear come straight off a running 2J from the mechanic not torqing down the cam bolts properly. Aside from a new cam belt and a scratched up cam cover, there was no damage, so no need to exaggerate that there will be thousand of pounds of damage. Non interference ftw

Agree!

So you should torqui the Bolt correctly :D

Please read this. You should not use the Stock Timing Belt for aftermarket Cam Gears:

The 2jz is a non interference engine as stock. But the only sensible reason you would fit adjustable cam gears is to fit high lift camshaft, in which case I believe I'm correct in saying the 2jz becomes an interference engine.

Its not the lift that would make it interference...its the timing/duration that would cause this, however unless the cams where very high duration, which is not necessary with a FI engine its still unlikely.

Correct, although you do need to go a bit higher in lift, from memory the HKS 256, 264 do not lift high enough to cause an issue, the JUN 264 and HKS 272 possibly, or is there two version of the HKS 272, a higher lift version I think.

The JUN cam wheels are worth mentioning, I had them fitted to mine when CW did the cam setup ;)

Really, my understanding is the lift is how far down into the cylinder the valve protrudes, duration is how long its open.

The stock cams and some aftermarket have lift that even when a cam belt fails if the valve is fully extended it would not touch a piston, the higher lift cams remove this safety margin.

I know if the lift is enough this can happen, but my understanding is that it needs considerable extra lift for this to happen, but if a cam has extended duration especially at the early opening and closing contact is more likely to happen if the belt snaps while running, especially at high RPMs.

But yes i was thinking ass about face on making that comment.

Most people I see in the UK who have them do it for the bling factor rather than getting any performance gain from adjustable cams. But yes, in theory they should complement aftermarket cams
