marbleapple
Evening all I took the car out for a drive tonight and tried to put the auto box into drive but couldn't see the options (L,D,P,N etc) in the dark on the gear selector next to the gear stick (if that's what you call it). Should the letters be lit up when you turn your lights on? If so, I assume the bulb has gone. How do you get to it and can anyone tell me the bulb size please? Rajinder
There is a light (not very bright) on the gear selector panel which lights up all the positions e.g. D P N etc and a red indicator that moves with the selection but is not lit. Not sure about the bulb but could be 12V 1.2W Panel Bulb Capless 1 Filament. Edited October 15, 2016 by Rajinder (see edit history)
Mk4Gaz
You should be able to tell what gear you're in, by looking at the instrument cluster.
Dnk
On a UK spec the gear selection is on the dash, on the tacho Edited October 16, 2016 by Dnk (see edit history)
brassbones
I replaced mine a couple of months ago. Just remove the centre console dash trim and feel underneath the plastic selector oval (on the numbers side obv!). You will feel the wire and the bayonet fitting. Twist it out and pull the bulb out of the bayonet (keep the green plastic shroud!). The bulb itself is in any emergency bulb kit (including the tesco £5 one http://www.tesco.com/direct/autocare-universal-bulb-kit/331-5951.prd?source=others) or any old motor factors shop for a quid
evinX
It takes a W5W bulb, i put a bright white W5W SMD in mine, well worth it. Pain in the backside to get at the socket though.
ianhid
I had a mare getting to mine, gave up and took the whole top off the selector housing in the end. If you pull the bottom of the shifter below the leather down and rotate it 90 degrees, you can lift the housing top high enough to get into the lamp. Apparently you can replace without doing that, I was just failing at any other method.
brassbones
I managed it with everything in place, although I'm not promising that the bayonet it fully locked back in place ... but the working bulb is definitely 'in the hole' Lol It all depends how OCD you are I guess (come to think of it, putting the green shroud on the new bulb is slightly OCD?)
