Really Loud Knocking noise

Recommended Posts

OK.

Weve already tightened the front Suspension bolts so I doubt it still is that.

- Sounds like Metal on Metal Knocking noise, 1-3 knocks each time

Can be heard everytime:

- you apply full lock on the steering wheel and go forward or reverse

- Brake really hard

Can it be the front springs? What about the way the springs sit in the upper mounts? perhaps they are not sitting properly and move about when I apply full lock OR when the full weight of the car is being transferred to the front on braking.

any other suggestions? and other experiences?

Help appreciated. :thanks:

mine is knocking too, as you say when i reverse on full lock or brake sharply there's a definite knock but it doesn't do it so much when braking softly or not on full lock at all.

i've had my sub-frame bolts checked and it's still doing it though....

just seems to be one thing after another :(

From your description it sounds like the subframe bolts. Have you checked them?

After reading through the various posts on here and Mawby's FAQ I got the subframe bolts checked and tightenend.

The noise still remains :help:

know where you are coming from supra-man....... :(

I got the same problem...have replaced droplinks, ARB bushes, checked subframe mounts and checked all suspension for play. Only thing left to try is wheel bearings. I did have an old celica that had this fault - it did turn out to be the wheel bearing. It had worn so much that the hub knackered too. Gonna check this ASAP.

"That knock"?? So you've heard it and can compare to the sound your own car made??

Everybody's perception of a knock is different. I wish I could diagnose someone else's car without actually listening to it in person!

:nana:

thats a fair comment, however it seems like there are a number of us with VERY similar symptoms, so I am surprised that there isnt a more definitive solution to this, or certainly some more suggestions.

Are you running stock suspension? I wonder if it could be the bump stops which have cracked, as these cars are getting on a bit now. Have checked the above mentioned like the subframe bolts which need to be tighten?

This thread is 5 years old, might be worth sending imi a PM, his a pretty active member on here & still has his Supe so could advise what he did.

i'm on yellow bistein shocks with standard springs, does anyone know the right torque settings for the subframe bolts please, i would just like to double check them myself just in case the garages couldn't be bothered to. I want to have a good look around the supe tomorrow myself but can you tell me what to look out for please guys
