imi
OK. Weve already tightened the front Suspension bolts so I doubt it still is that. - Sounds like Metal on Metal Knocking noise, 1-3 knocks each time Can be heard everytime: - you apply full lock on the steering wheel and go forward or reverse - Brake really hard Can it be the front springs? What about the way the springs sit in the upper mounts? perhaps they are not sitting properly and move about when I apply full lock OR when the full weight of the car is being transferred to the front on braking. any other suggestions? and other experiences? Help appreciated.
mikeyb10supra
Could be control arms on there way out......or wheel bearings... mine is starting to knock as well......when I break for the first time.....ie when I first get in and start to drive and when I brake on full lock feels like its knocking under your feet???? imi
Mine occurs without braking too, so when I do a 3 point turn for example, or lets say I am reverse parking. I have changed the drop-links but to no avail. perhaps it is the control arms.....dunno
carl0s
From your description it sounds like the subframe bolts. Have you checked them?
Ian W
mine is knocking too, as you say when i reverse on full lock or brake sharply there's a definite knock but it doesn't do it so much when braking softly or not on full lock at all. i've had my sub-frame bolts checked and it's still doing it though.... just seems to be one thing after another
imi
From your description it sounds like the subframe bolts. Have you checked them? After reading through the various posts on here and Mawby's FAQ I got the subframe bolts checked and tightenend. The noise still remains know where you are coming from supra-man....... straightsix
I got the same problem...have replaced droplinks, ARB bushes, checked subframe mounts and checked all suspension for play. Only thing left to try is wheel bearings. I did have an old celica that had this fault - it did turn out to be the wheel bearing. It had worn so much that the hub knackered too. Gonna check this ASAP.
Ian W
i hope to god it's not the wheel bearings and even more-so that it's not knackered the hub as well!! have spent about £1500 in the past three months on it and it's just starting to bloody annoy me now...... imi
so you guys dont think it sounds like the dampers on their way out OR not sitting properly in the upper mount?
DAVEBOY
i had that knock it was my shocks
straightsix
i had that knock it was my shocks "That knock"?? So you've heard it and can compare to the sound your own car made?? Everybody's perception of a knock is different. I wish I could diagnose someone else's car without actually listening to it in person! I wish I could diagnose someone else's car without actually listening to it in person! thats a fair comment, however it seems like there are a number of us with VERY similar symptoms, so I am surprised that there isnt a more definitive solution to this, or certainly some more suggestions. Paul372
two different garages look at my supe and said they couldn't see anything wrong with the bushes and it went on one of them machines that shakes the car about and nothing showed up, i guess i will have to work my way through replacing bits
Abz
Are you running stock suspension? I wonder if it could be the bump stops which have cracked, as these cars are getting on a bit now. Have checked the above mentioned like the subframe bolts which need to be tighten? This thread is 5 years old, might be worth sending imi a PM, his a pretty active member on here & still has his Supe so could advise what he did. imi
In my case it was the front subframe bolts that were not tightened properly.
Swampy442
No point in doing that, repair by replacement is expensive!! Looking at the symptoms its a load front to rear thats causing the knock, all you have is the wishbones that transmit the load. Are you on coilovers? Are the top mounts ok? adnanshah247
knocking at full lock indicates it could be the cv joint. have experienced this fault on other cars and after changeing the cv joint its all good, look for splits in the gator.
